Bristow Commercial Pilot Sponsorship NOW
This is a fantastic chance for any of you who want to be a helicopter pilot!
Basically, 4 (UK) people will be picked and will get to do a Private Licence for aeroplanes first next summer in England then you will get sent of to Bristow Academy in florida for a year to do your Integrated CPL H course, then back to Bristow in the UK to do your MEIR and then you have a job as a first officer with Bristow!

Not sure were the ageism or discrimation is being driven from , but 18 - 26 is not my idea of being open to any one that wants to become a helicopter pilot.

Surely the age limit is illegal under The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006, as this would come under 'vocational training'? I'm surprised it was even published - Flight International stopped allowing us to use age limits in job adverts a few years ago (we used to say 35-50.)

Churning out tons of JAA CPL graduates. But these 'graduates' might not neccessarily what an operator wants. Having a licence is one thing... Having the right 'attitude' towards the job is another. Might be other reasons or Bristow is reverting back to what they used to do. Seems to work well back then.

Thank you for bringing back memories... went to Bristow Helicopters (in Beccles), in 1978 begging for a job but could not "afford" it then... Must say I had a very warm welcome there anyway. Good luck to all the applicants. Safe flying all. Al

Big congratulations to the four lucky lads/lasses who get picked, but I cannot help but to feel that it is a little bit "unfair". I'm slightly (well, slightly+) too old and will pay for all of it myself to try to get a job with Bristow north sea operations...
Oh well, no use to feel sorry for myself

Else it'd be even more discriminatory than just the ageism.
I was 'too old' and not fitting profile for one scheme, fully funded training with job on utility twin afterwards. Now I' after my training and too old for this one.

Firstly, The Air League corporate statement is "Keeping Britain at the forefront of Aviation". That couldn't be much clearer that it is for British nationals or resident citizens.
Secondly, This is not employment - this is a sponsored training course. So the age definitions under the employment act will not apply. They are also exactly the same limitations as when Bristow ran fully sponsored courses at Redhill.
You will not be paid while under training - probably not even allowances. The first money you get will be when you have started with the company in the UK.
The selection process for aptitude etc will be conducted by the RAF at Cranwell, with those shortlisted being interviewed in London (probably by the Air League and also by Bristow staff).
The NPPL has a minimum hour requirement of 22hours dual plus 10 hours solo, giving a total of 32 hours. You will be expected to pass the course in these minimum hours.
Unfortunately, for those of you that already have helicopter ppl's, you may be considered overqualified. Teaching a student with a "clean sheet" is considered easier than trying to correct bad habits already learned.
The self-funded students are just that. They haven't been through any sort of selection process to find out what sort of person they are - they have just paid a lot of money to get through their licence. That is not to denigrate those that have begged, borrowed or whatever to fund their course. Bristow just need to find the people they want, and they have the right to do so when they are going to spend in the region of £120k+ on them.

I will be very surprised if Bristow are paying anything towards this scheme. The Bristow academy is churning out tons of JAA CPL "graduates" every year already. All self-funded.

The fact they want you to do the Basics on aeroplanes says alot I think. This is in line with the training air force pilots get.
Don't ask me the science behind it, but somebody, at some stage thought it would be good practice to have the cadets start out on fixed wing (At least the first few hours anyways).

Bristows look as if they are planning to replace their retiring staff with their sort of staff. The expansion of the 70s using ex miltary have already retired and the next batch is all their Redhill trainees of the 80s. Som of them have been very successfull all round in the company so I would have thought that they would prefer to repeat the experiment.
