Thanks for the additional photographs. I remember seeing G-AXGO regularly at Battersea Heliport where the owner, wearing a bowler hat, got out and slowed the rotors down using his brolly. Lotus did have a Jetranger G-AYTF sold to them by Alan Mann in 1979. I will did out some Alan Mann shots

To add to some very old posts I have just read about “The spy who loves me”. The 206 was G-BAML and was used, burning and turning, on the sound stage at Pinewood for the close ups of Caroline Munro flying and displaying large amounts of cleavage. I was lying on the floor making movements on the controls to simulate her flying. Most enjoyable!

Seond posts concern the Barrett’s tv advert flying through the wall. The 206 was G-BEKA belonging to Barrett’s and the Allouette 2 was G-AWAP. John Crewdson. John flew the 206 and only clipped the top of the wall before the light ran out. I flew AP as the safety and for the close ups of Patrick Allen. Date was 19 June 77 in a sand pit near Colchester. BW to all

Mr. Jolly Lives Next Door, 1987.

Hello, All

I'm joining this old thread, hopefully as a direct link to those knowledgeable of Alan Mann Helicopters.
AMH's AGUSTA AW109 - G-HWBK was used in the film, Mr. Jolly Lives Next Door back in 1987.
In the production Nicholas Parsons is airlifted from his house for a trip to London, it's this airlift site that I'm trying to locate.
New to this forum I'm unable to upload images currently, but you can view the film on Vimeo, the action occurring at 0:38:00.
Is there anyone on here that would know the filming schedules and locations from the '80s

Thanks for reading my post,

Jacob

Due to its Cayman registration securing details of Tarmac's corporate mount is a little cumbersome. She was evidently imported from the US so I'm not even sure whether Mann's were involved .. though I suspect they probably were.

Does anyone happen to know in which year AMH lost the Agusta distributorship?
I joined Sloane Helicopters in 1995 to clean/handle VR-CCK with Cast. Derek Mann flying, it must have been around that time when AMH lost the distributorship.

Joining Mann's 'construction 109's' would have been N109AB, John Laing's 109 II an image of which can be seen on page 6.

I remember when VP-CCK returned back to Sloane Helicopters after the darker green strip was replaced for the light green, Derek Lewis (Engineer) said "It's like the multi colours of Benetton" followed by a swift "F@*k Off" from Derek Mann... happy days!

Twas me.

I was AM first customer for the 109.. The first in the Country !! That much I recall
I started the aviation department of Barratt Developments. Ended up with two twin fixed wing, Golden Eagle and Navajo plus one A109, and a twin Squirrel the F1 version (not very good too heavy and no payload) But the first heli I bought for the company was the 206 - Re G-BEKH ... I flew the arse off it... that in a very short period of time.. some 1200 hrs inside the first 2 years ! I featured with this helicopter twice a night in short 30 second tv commercials. Literally twice a night on national TV. The company spent million on TV ads. Considering the 206 was a simple VFR machine that is some going. I suggested to the Chairman the machine was too slow and not upto the job. Sir Laurie Barratt said to me ' You are an officer of the company come up with a suggestion and fix the issue' By chance I think someone from AM asked if I would be interested in a Demo ? I said yes but you need to bring the machine here to Newcastle. A factory pilot turned up with an Italian registered machine doing a UK tour. After flying it for only 30 or 40 minutes and after a coupled approach and testing the cruise speed, I was sold on the product. I told the Chairman the problem is resolved... I placed the order and the rest is history. I asked how would you like it painted... Answer .. you chose ... Ok says I, and that's how it ended up with no design input at all, a green stripe ..that sit.. I didn't really care... so long as it was fast. I chose the registration and was proud of it. Being the very first in the country lead to issues. One was educating (in a way) ATC. They had no experience of a helicopter approaching in the descent from flight level 110 doing 168 knots. So very enjoyable. One night in a great storm I took off from Bristol heading for Mac's at Luton; leveled off at just 3500 feet for this short hop, S/L indicated speed 152 knots. Ground speed 230 knots... A giant tailwind if ever ! I never saw such a tail wind ever again .. not once in the next 41 years. I attended the factory course in 1979 I sold my 109 MK2 in 2020 so 41 years in the saddle flying 109's - 49 as a professional pilot. I started young. I flew both this 206 and the 109 over the Alps from the Agusta factory in winter, I purchased the 206 from Oxford - CSE not AM not sure if AM was the distributor back then, think it was CSE ?.. this 206 was later damaged after an in house fellow pilot did a great job landing the heli after a total engine failure. I had three in my career. One lycoming B47 engine, two Allison C20B ~ Re this machine the pilot (ex SAS) was a quiet fellow and capable. A good friend. AM Helicopters did a great job looking after me and I thank them for that. I still own the UK largest Heliport, but sure as hell not the busiest !! I sold my helicopters and now spend far too much time now on Youtube riding horses and riding my Goldwing 2018 type, full digital machine and glorious... I am very pleased to say the vast majority of visiting helicopters to my heliport are (95%) are 109's ... I saw back in 79 what real speed would mean to helicopter aviation, I was not wrong. I came across this site quite by chance. Somewhere I might have a whole bunch of photographs I will dig out and share...

The candidate turned up at Fairoaks wih his shiny new toy only to be confronted by a puzzled examiner who said, "where are the screens". "What screens?" came the reply.

Never in the field of human endeavour has any pilot been so unprepared for what followed. The kind examiner did not give up but came into our office and borrowed a copy of yesterday's Daily Telegraph and some masking tape and duffed-up some screens out of the newspaper.

I am not sure at what stage the examiner realised that Johnny Pilot couldn't tell a hold from an iLS but let's just say that he, Johnny, expected a military style test and - FAILED.

Per Ardua etc

Well forgive me for saying, you got this tale wrong. Gossip is like that and often repeated by the foolish. I never held a master green. Nor did I sit an exam at Fairoaks.. I did however set up a training flight with an examiner. There were no screens as you mentioned... in existence anywhere in the world! The QHI said he could fix that. I found that training valuable. I did not fly an ILS or a hold, these did not exist at Fairoaks then and still do not to this day. . What you published is utter nonsense so typical of engineers crew room gossip, not even half the tale is factual. In fact PPRune is like that, damaging silly gossip - factually inaccurate being the norm.
