I believe all the (civil) BV234s are now all owned and operated by "Columbia Helicopters" ......

I used to love seeing the Chinook around Aberdeen. Great aircraft to see, although I know from reading elsewhere that it wasn't a favourite for some.

Post 1986 did the type do any ad-hoc flying or did they sit around ABZ before they were disposed of? Think I recall a few non-oil charters.

When did the last one leave?

As I recall, 6 in the BAH fleet. Miss them today.

I'm sure finally I remember one substituting on a BA flight to Glasgow, replacing a Budgie. Maybe my memory is playing tricks.

BAH Chinooks

Hi Richard

The last 3 BV234's left ABZ in 1989-1990 to columbia Helicopters G-BISN,SP,SR.

These were the last Chinook's to fly out of Aberdeen since the 1986 accident of Sumburgh.

After the Accident all 3 machine's were stored in ABZ without work for 3 years with some ad-hoc work but not enough to keep them here.

I miss them very much too great machines.

Selective memory

I think certain people are reviewing the past through heavily rose tinted spectacles. The BV 234 was far from a success as a North Sea machine. The vibration levels were unacceptable for both passengers and crew. The unseemly scramble for passengers boarding in an attempt to avoid sitting in the middle of the cabin where the blades overlapped put anything experienced with Easyjet or Ryanair in the shade.
I recall one occasion, during a phase when the BV 234 was operating at reduced VNE because of vibration, when a Bristow Tiger overtook on an outbound Aberdeen radial, lowering its undercarriage as a friendly gesture, thereby prompting an official complaint by British Airways Helicopters of ungentlemanly conduct!

Sorry Snarlie,

I think that I might have been involved in that prank although it could have happened more than once. It was on the 033 radial in those days, you were going to the Magnus if I remember.

A short interview with Captain Smith ensued post flight but I didn't get into too much trouble because I was a lowly co pilot in those days. I felt bad though because I think I suggested it to the P1 and being a nice guy he went along with the plan.

Sorry couldn't find the previous related thread, and just found a few pics to post. Apologies for the rather poor images, taken a long time ago on rather basic equipment.
