Dont forget that BHL have a load of houses that with the loss of the SAR contract will now be vacant therefore providing accomodation for the Scatsa crews instead of renting at Brae(also don't have to sell them to the enemy). Also plenty of hangar space that is soon going to be vacant, as well as an ILS which regardless of weather is better than an SRA/NDB into scatsa, add to that an increase in the chance that the fixed wing will get in.
Will be sorry to see Scatsa go if it does happen.

Can you have an ILS with an offset approach track? It would have to be (as the LOC 09 is at the moment) because of the cumulogranitus that is Fitful Head.

As someone previously mentioned, it is not all about the nav facilities and security etc... The regular stumbling block with the current operation is with the 146's, through no fault of their's or their operator. Passenger moral / care is taken quite seriously, especially after the year that was 2006!!! Quite often they have to reduce the payload up to SCS due to cross winds/lack of wind, and can only take 2 helicopter loads meaning 3 jets have to fly up each rotation of heli flights, hence sometimes only up to 40pax onboard..... Coming out of SCS they sometimes come out light as one may wait for one or a couple of late helis while another 146 takes out those already on the ground- saving money then comes second to getting the bears home as quick as possible believe it or not! Most of the time the planes can take out a full load, over 90 pax is a regular occurance! Landing on 06 in SCS in low cloud is a major problem, the flight having to do an SRA to 24, then up to 1000 feet to circle to land! There are cons for leaving SCS too though, a lot of money has been spent on the facilities there, the IAC have sole use of the airport and would not have that luxury in LSI. I also understand that if the IAC were to leave SCS there would be significant financial costs to the IAC companies. It is pointless trying to figure out what will happen, representatives from the oil & gas operators and Bristow will decide what the future is, based on these and many other reasons. i just hope it is the right one, whatever that may be...

The ILS for 27 is offset by 2.6 degrees to the north and is CAT 1.
The LLZ approach for 09 is offset by 2.2 degrees to the south.
Approach lights would be great but they would need to be floating on buoys...

dont you love politics eh?
ok the big bosses will decide where the oil flights will eventually operate to, out of personal interest, what do the people at the sharp end think?
An ils approach (and dont forget the countless number of procedural approaches) a benefit?? where would YOU prefer to fly into?
less cramped conditions for pax at PB etc etc?

Upto 8 Million quid has been made available through a leasing agreement of some kind with the local council. Should make for some good improvements (as point out by B of P) and a lot of interesting days ahead....

New terminal to be built alongside exisiting one (Q2 2008) which will be "landside" allowing pax easier access to outdoors for a smoke, retail outlet, better catering facilities... Offshore personnel to be consulted and have the opportunity to add to design features of new terminal. (All by Q2 2008) Current terminal will become security / suit up areas. Old offices to be demolished. New hangar to accommodate the 6 S-92's (Q4 2007) alongside exisiting. IAC manager position created to ensure service level is optimised (Q4 2007). Primary & secondary radar to be installed (Q1 2008). ILS to be looked at and installed subject to survey (installed Q2 2008 if installed).
Modular design of new hangar and terminal in construction to allow current operation to run without disruption.
Advantages of Scatsta said to be: Sole use by IAC, the income from BPSVT terminal movements, having close alternate airfield (Sumburgh), better weather record at Scatsta though not currently taken advantage of due to lack of nav facilities- hence the installation of radar and ILS.
Nothing mentioned about any extra tarmac space / length. Fixed wing operator / aircraft to remain for now though I am aware that the IAC will look at replacing fixed wings in the future as some of the 146's are 20 years old.

Hi Simfly,
146's are only 20 years young - remember the Viscounts
Good news all round, cept maybe for HIAL for LSI - but they blew their chance when the Shell operation tried to reduce costs at LSI originally and HIAL wouldn't play ball.
Mucho politics involved but at least there's still two airfields in operation for the forseeable future.
Haven't been on the old bus for some time now but should have a trip through summer (fog..) time.

HIAL or HIA or Hiya, have reduced the CAT from 6 to 4 at Sumburgh as of 01 August. Rumour has it that the people at Scatsta are now having to pay extension fee's daily to have Sumburgh at Cat 6 so that they can still have a viable operation at Scatsta. So maybe Hial haven't lost out yet? Better to be paid something for doing nothing?
Does this mean that Scatsta is not workable without a fully operational Sumburgh??
