The Mi24 .. probably my favourite among the world's 'ugly' helicopters not least of all because of its impressive speed and maneuverability.

The automated fire from the side-mounted 30cal (a feature of the 'P' model so favoured among African air forces) at 1:21 is a thing of beauty!

I used to fly these as an aggressor pilot against our US military. It is a 30mm gun. The thing had a habit of rolling rapidly if during a high bank angle turn and loading it. The inside wing would quit flying. Your only option at that point was to continue the roll or use opposite pedal to bring it back. It was very fast due to it's positive angle of incidence wings. Also it was air conditioned and pressurized to fly in a NBC environment sans gas mask.

The only scary wobble was camera man induced... a drink or two should make it more stable.

Wobble

Might be normal manoeuvre, but having to turn into the wind like that in close quarters, just before touch down like that sure looked scary to me. thxs for comment.

Wobble

Trying to keep cam stable while hand held on zoom very difficult, was lucky to get heli in shot. wobble tends to be at 100% 25x zoom, but a few beers might help, thanks for advice.

Close quarters? I assume, it just looked close because it was filmed with high zoom ???

Wobble

Understand optics and zoom, but that heli pad is very small, and have watched many take offs and landings mainly with ec 135 in strong wind and sure there is wobble, but never that low.

BO105 wobble?

He wasn't wobbling, he was coiling his sling line before landing.

This video might show you what the area is like and a bit of what the work is like, but it is more about show boating and flying irresponsibly. The rest of us don't fly like that in the DRC... it's just too risky - especially as there is no help when your finger comes out your ass...!!!

Sure the SA CAA would love a copy of that for their next inspection on BAC operations...
