Mi 26 up close
I've noticed a few Mi 26 pics here, but they are all from a distance. I had the good fortune to be able to get close to one while working in Sudan. My company was contracting to the UN and due to the fact that the town I was based in was cut off by land, the UN flew our stuff in for us. Here are some of the pics I took or had taken. It had just rained the previous night. Normally flight ops cease after rain, as it is (obviously) a dirt strip.
I really wouldn't mind sitting here for real. Those are not trees and lakes out of the window, they are puddles and grass.

Your pictures are great, they show the most impressive helicopter (IMHO) in the world better than nobody had shown it before in this thread. Plus they made me feel like I was back in Africa, it brought mixed feelings and in the end I felt good.

I wish I had more, especially of me actually flying one (that of course will have to remain an unfulfilled wish

From these wonderful photos you get the feeling of what helicopters are really all about. Workhorses in action doing what helicopters do best - work into and out of non-airfield sites miles from anywhere. And which the Russian helicopters are best at.

the snow might cause a rollover if there was a crust on the top and the takeoff was hurried/careless. i have departed (with an astar & 500D) from situations like that many times.
generally, before you lower the collective and shut down you will have tested the surface and done a good seating check. if there is any doubt, best not to shut down and relocated to somewhere that is acceptable. (in the pic, it seems to me that you can see the flight step and not the actual skid tubes, i could be wrong).
you cannot tell from the picture if that machine is equiped with bear paws or not, but it looks like they new that the surface was solid and flat so the risk of having the tail sink into the snow was taken care of. also, it is obviously large enough (some sort of playing feild perhaps?) and if it were me i'd favour an edge so i could keep the fence/boards in sight during the snowball in order to keep references.

Yes it is a small village Football field and you can see the Flitesteps, not the skids. Normal deep snow landing, with a good thump with the collective to settle it and a slight nose forward to keep the tail out of the snow.
We are quite close to the fence behind me, but a zoom lens fore-shortens the pic.

Couldn't you just turn on the nightsun rotate it 360 and melt all the snow?

I once worked for a company ( TQH) in Canada - we had high skids and full airglass skis instead of bearpaws on all our B206B/L AS350 and B205 - they were great - best for snow, however, was fixed floats. Fun and games.

Alpine Bell LongRanger III C-GALJ on low skid gear with ski basket mounted on the RH side (barely visible). Taken near CMH GALENA LODGE in the Selkirk Mtns of BC this winter. They were getting snowfalls of well over 1.0 Meters PER Storm cycle in January.
The Pilot/Photographer extrordinare is "NG Limited"
