I believe Grampian News had it all over their headlines, ie. that a major disruption had been averted due to the fact that North Sea helicopter pilots had won parity with their counterparts flying planes to Corfu.

If I had been an entrepeneur and been given the choice of taking a group of people to the middle of the North Sea (at night, in snow and ice) or the Mediterranean, I know who I would have expected to pay more for driving me there.

Let's hope that these guys in Scotia, who went out on a limb ( but got BALPA's support) have woken up helicopter management. We're in this business together, and for almost a strike to be actioned is saying that there is a lack of understanding somewhere!

I would also think that the Scotia deal has repurcussions for the poor guys who work overseas in sometimes worse conditions.

Major win in campaign to stem flow of helicopter pilots from North Sea

There has been a major step forward in the long-running campaign to stem the flow of experienced helicopter pilots from the North Sea by improving pay rates. In a secret ballot, British Air Line Pilots' Association members at CHC Scotia have overwhelmingly accepted a groundbreaking agreement which will at last close the gap in pay between helicopter pilots and that of pilots of commercial airliners. 93 per cent voted for acceptance.

Christopher Darke, BALPA General Secretary, said: 'The gap will be closed over two years, not three and a half which the company had earlier proposed and the agreement will mean a pay increase for pilots of up to £18,000 over the two years.'

John Moore, BALPA Principal Negotiator, added: 'We welcome this very positive ballot result and believe that the enhanced pay rates will enable CHC Scotia to retain the young, highly-skilled helicopter pilots who represent the future of the industry.'

I hope the Bristow North Sea pilots are happy now.....with Scotia pilots standing tall and forcing management to meet their demands for improved wages. I guess the Bristow pilots will "muddle through" on their 11% pay raise and ignore the huge difference in their pay and that of Scotia's. Anyone want to guess which North Sea company will have recruiting problems now.....errrr....my money is on Bristow....guess my job in Nigeria is safe for a while....."for what that might be worth!" How sympathetic a hearing might the Bristow North Sea chaps get at their local pub when they begin to cry in their beer....it will have to be half's....they won't be able to afford Pints!

Heloplt, what a load of crap you spout!

There are still plenty of opportunities for BHL to take action if the Company doesn't start coming up with the goods either on benchmarking, or now especially as it is trying to play around with the Final Salary Pension Scheme.

Those at the top of the management tree have no idea of the strength of feeling that will be shown if they decide to try and scrap the pension scheme, and many are now completely cheesed off with the lack of a plan for the bench-marking talks which was supposed to be completed by 30 Novemeber.

Scotia have done well and will have made an influence on what BHL will do. One thing the aircrew will not do is sit on their backsides!

Congratulations on your pay awards. Perhaps now we "shore based" pilots might be able to make some progress. If anyone should be crying in their beer I'd suggest it's us as we are now down almost 50% on the Scotia deal. I don't know about half pints, I'm struggling with a tea cup at the moment !!!
