Lightbulb A Wannabee

having been pointed in this direction from the wannabees forum, can i ask does anyone know how i can get into flying those funny looking things with the propellor on the top?
i do know about the bristow sponsorship, but don't fancy living in aberdeen for the rest of my days. are there any other sponsored schemes?

otherwise i'll carry on with selling my internal organs to finance this lark.

any ideas much appreciated

One option is to try the military for the minimum time - at least the flying is fun rather than flying tramlines over the North Sea.

Beggars can't be choosers in this game!

If you are serious about flying helos take whatever you can get - Aberdeen or otherwise. One exposure leads to the next.

The road can be long but experience and the right attitude is the only path to choice.

Go for it!

Go-Around :
I went for Bristow's sponsorship in the early 90's - ending up with a CPL(H) and being paid for it seemed pretty good.

Didn't work out - 400 applicants for 40 interviews for 5 jobs - got an interview and fluffed it.

Never mind, I'm now in the position to be able to self-finance my CPL(H) because I'm in IT - funny how the world turns.

If you go into it - make damn sure your eyes are wide open, have a fallback plan, and think about getting dual qualified asap in case you get bored. There are some fun jobs there, like the Coastguard SAR stuff, but you'll need hours and hours to go for them.

If you want more current info, ring up Bristow's head office, or even better speak to a base like Dyce or North Denes ( if that's still open ) and get genned up.

Thumbs up

Swiftlee as I think you guessed there is more to helo flying than operating the North Sea 'busses' and for that matter being shot at as a military pilot! IMHO it appears you might use some external advice before parting with your hard earned.

The British Helicopter Advisory Board (http://www.bhab.demon.co.uk) provide an information resource for wanabee helicopter pilots and can usually point someone in your position in the right direction.

The web also has a number of resources dedicated to the helicopter pilot (http://www.JustHelicopters.com, http://www.helicopters.uk.com & http:/www.plh.co.uk) are some of the more useful ones.

If you are serious about joining the profession don't give up, learn the full facts and get advice young man!

There is a rumour that Bristows may be sponsoring again next year. But it's only talk at the moment. However, once on the course there is no guarantee of completion. Some courses are disbanded early depending on work available.

There seems to be an upturn in work for next year and if those pilots with an ATPL(A) eventually get a job fixed wing then there could be a shortage.

Incidently there is more to Bristows than Aberdeen they do have other UK and overseas bases. Although I've been told job security there isn't very good at the moment and morale is rock bottom.

Most CG SAR co pilots are Bristow sponsored and have only about 400 hours max obviously the Captains are very experienced.

Scotia seem to be on the lookout, but for experienced pilots with a view to use them for command.

You could try the miltary but don't expect a lot of flying or many serviceable aircraft.

To be honest if your looking for a job in aviation with decent pay and job security then you'd be better off with the planks.

Rusty.

Bristow sponsorship is a little up in the air (or not ) at the moment. The training school at Redhill closed last year and sponsored training has been moved to Helicopter adventures in the US. Three courses of four sponsored students were scheduled but of those none were given jobs within Bristow, indeed four were sold to Scotia. It may be that they will begin sponsorship again, but if they do, be under no false impessions. It's hard to get on the course and if you do - expect to become a number. On the up side, you get a CPLH and there are worse places to learn the trade than the North sea. (Can't think of any of them off hand).

Good luck! If i can get thru' it anyone can.
