My mistake....all you Aussies look alike you know!

I posted that during a break from watching the House Committee investigating the Benghazi Attack....and had not shifted gears yet.

Am trying to think of the Aussies I met in PNG who flew in 'Nam' .. David Earley yes (perhaps even the UH1 .. not sure) and Mal Smith also .. but I don't know what he flew.

According to SASless the UH1's were US Army .. I did wonder how the Aussie's had managed to receive a consignment of Hueys when Bell were shipping everything they had off to the conflict.

Can anyone tell me when the first UH1's were delivered to Aus? Who had them first, the Aussie Army or Air Force?

The Aussies' had UH-1D/H's that operated out of Nui Dat. What was interesting about them as I recall is they had flex mounted guns along with the standard Door Gunner's....which the US Army never did.

The 135th were a different Unit altogether....and not part of the Australian Huey unit(s).

The Benefit to the EMU's is the Australian Navy guys got the benefit of flying with Army Pilots. That must have been a lively place at night around the Bar!

SAS ... My buddies sort of tell it was the other way around but yes I'm sure the bar was an interesting place to be

Sav .... Mal Smith, Peter Spoor and Roger Dundas were all Aussie Army (I think 161 Recce) and got together after the conflict to form "Pacific Helicopters"
... I really don't know about Dave Early's history but he was also Oz Army (but that is probably a bit freudian on my part )

Cheers

My sole first hand encounter with Aussie Hueys was in 1989 when the RAAF 35 Squadron showed up at Mt. Hagen in Papua New Guinea with four UH1's.

The 35 arrive in Mt. Hagen PNG in 1989 ..

.. and set up their tent on Rotorwork's front lawn ..

.. and started playing cricket!

I was invited to join the ground crew as an 'honourary judge' holding up score cards while the air crews performed autorotations and was able to award a "10" for one lucky driver who after hitting a 'lump' in the grass during his run on .. decided to turn his effort into a touch an go!

It was a 'lost week' with many memorable moments courtesy of the 35's youthful energy and overall congeniality. I made several friends .. in particular with the leader of this 'rabble' .. a chap called Chris Spence.

Wing Commander Chris Spence who led the 'rowdy rabble' which was the 35 Sqn during their 1989 tour of PNG

I think this was the 35's last visit to PNG with the Iroquois.

Spinwing: Thanks for the details on Aussie drivers in 'Nam.

John and Brian might pay attention to this short story.

The year is 2016 and the United States has just elected the first woman president. A few days after the election the president-elect, whose name is Debra, calls her father and says, "So, Dad, I assume you will be coming to my inauguration?"

"I don't think so. It's a 10 hour drive."

"Don 't worry about it Dad, I'll send Air Force One. And a limousine will pick you up at your door."

"I don't know. Everybody will be so fancy. What would your mother wear?"

"Oh Dad," replies Debra, 'I'll make sure she has a wonderful gown custom-made by the best designer in Washington ."

"Honey," Dad complains, "you know I can't eat those rich foods you eat."

The President-to-be responds, "Don 't worry Dad. The entire affair will be handled by the best caterer in Washington ; I'll ensure your meals are salt free. You and mom just have to be there."

So Dad reluctantly agrees, and on January 20, 2017, Debra is being sworn in as President of the United States . In the front row sits the new president's dad and mom.

Dad, noticing the senator sitting next to him, leans over and whispers, "You see that woman over there with her hand on the Bible, becoming President of the United States ."

The Senator whispers back, "You bet I do."

Dad says proudly, "Her brother is an Army Helicopter Pilot!"

Savoia, The history of each Australian Huey airframe can be found here

ADF Serials - RAAF/Army A2/N9 Bell UH-1B/D/H Iroquois

Hueys were only ever delivered to the RAAF and Navy. All the RAAF Hueys were transferred to the Army in later years.

No apology necessary John. In fact, if you're passing this way on your travels from the high country do drop in for a breather.

Gentlemen, does anyone of you have an TM 55-1520-210-23-1 maintenance manual for UH-1H, or Pilot handbook on electrical system from Fort Rucker... or detailed DC wiring diagram for the Huey ? I need it to prove how the voltmeter is wired in that helicopter.

And the old girl is still going strong.

The Canadian Helicopters fleet of 212HP's in Afghanistan is still going strong and has been an incredible tool, despite the environment.

Nui Dat

I haven't heard that name in a long time. I was transitioning from UH-1C heavy Hogs to the AH-iG , with the NETT in Vung Tau. I recall hearing someone speaking English when we were transitioning to the firing range, talking to Nui Dat Control, but for the life of me could not figure out what planet they were from. First time I heard an Aussy speak.

Bell Huey lifts yacht in Devon

Are there many Hueys doing commerical work in the UK?

The article mentions a company Helirig in Newbury and their website shows the Russian helicopter and Puma. Are these helicopters in the UK? Is there a helipad in Newbury?
