My sole first hand encounter with Aussie Hueys was in 1989 when the RAAF 35 Squadron showed up at Mt. Hagen in Papua New Guinea with four UH1's.

The 35 arrive in Mt. Hagen PNG in 1989 ..

.. and set up their tent on Rotorwork's front lawn ..

.. and started playing cricket!

I was invited to join the ground crew as an 'honourary judge' holding up score cards while the air crews performed autorotations and was able to award a "10" for one lucky driver who after hitting a 'lump' in the grass during his run on .. decided to turn his effort into a touch an go!

It was a 'lost week' with many memorable moments courtesy of the 35's youthful energy and overall congeniality. I made several friends .. in particular with the leader of this 'rabble' .. a chap called Chris Spence.

Wing Commander Chris Spence who led the 'rowdy rabble' which was the 35 Sqn during their 1989 tour of PNG

I think this was the 35's last visit to PNG with the Iroquois.

Spinwing: Thanks for the details on Aussie drivers in 'Nam.
