Dual Engine Flameout B777

Quick Question:
Dual Engine Flameout B777: Part of the Recall item; Fuel Control Switches to Cutout and then to Run.
When carrying out wind-milling start - After sometime, when the engines fail to start, do you knock the Fuel Control Switches to cutout and Run again?
It does not say anywhere in the checklist to carry this out again. Pls correct me if I am wrong.
As I understand it, once the recall item is done, this energises the start sequence and there is no need to to carry out that particular recall item again.
If that particular recall item is to be carried out again, when do you attempt it? Height? Time?
Any inputs? Many thanks.

Hi, as far as I understand, if no startlimits are exceeded you can attempt as often as you like or wish. If I would be gliding in a 777, it would be enough reason for me to attempt till my fingers turn blue!

keep in mind that ,especially at high altitudes, the engines may accelerate to idle very slowly.Slow acceleration may be incorrectly interpreted as a hung start.Check N2 and EGT for correct engine start progression.Don't jump on the fuel control switches again, and again..
It's a glider,although a big one,but she flies ok,no worry...

Yeah but you're still gliding towards earth and not away from it. At some point it stops. Oh yeah, I forgot. Let's ditch.

Straight from the Boeing Non-Normal checklist for Dual Engine Fail -

"Engines may accelerate to idle slowly. Slow acceleration may be incorrectly interpreted as a hung start or engine malfunction. Any further cycling of the fuel control switches will result in longer start times."

(Emboldened emphasis mine).

That's for RR Trent engines, procedures may differ for other engines on the B777. Hope that this helps.

Regards,

Old Smokey

Indeed, Smokey, RollsRoyce is VERY specific about these items and it is thus so on the very first RR big fan as well, the RB.211.
When in doubt folks, follow the written procedures, as they have been accessed as the best, by the manufacturer.

Do not substitute...follow the book.

I can recall several occasions with the vibration system on the RB.211, and a few pilots thinking...'oh, we just ignore that, it ain't reliable'....followed by a big BANG, and much consternation.

I believe the reason to select the fuel control switches to OFF then ON is to reset the nozzle guide vanes for the ensuing start, possibly to ensure the optimum mass flow through the compressor section to help eliminate hot and hung starts. Pls. correct me if I'm wrong.
