Has anyone heard anything from TUI since the January update? i.e are we still expecting to hear back around now (being mid March)?

If you go on the TUI website where you can check your application does some of yours say “in progress” or “submitted”.

I was hoping to find out this week as they said it’ll be mid March till we find out, now it’s been changed to end of March so another two weeks left.

hey, I’m having a look at class 1 bookings at the moment.
I’m a UK citizen but would ideally like to open my horizons to the likes of having both CAA and EASA class 1s (especially at the extortionate price of the initial medicals now! They used to be £100-200.. what happened!?)

was just wondering if there is additional costs having the dual medical at an approved facility? Seeing as you had a dual done, was it more expensive than getting just the CAA? If they are the same price it seems a no brainer to get both for me and keep options open! But it’s probably not that simple…

considering getting the dual done given how expensive the initial medical is. But if it’s more expensive I’ll probably opt for just the CAA given I’m a UK citizen and have no plans of moving.
it’s just a shame on potentially losing out on the option of Ryanair being such a big recruiter here!

Hi Lauda, I've got dual CAA / EASA class one's, and yes it is more expensive c. £900 for both, but as you say its a no brainer to keep options open

You can book a dual Class 1 Medical at Gatwick or Heathrow. It's all done on the one day :)

Hey, it was around £950 for both so works out £300ish extra. Birmingham Aeromedical has prices on their site. Still much cheaper than getting both separately in the UK. You could get the CAA initial here and then go somewhere on the continent for an EASA initial which will be be cheaper than getting it done here.
Keep in mind though, both medicals only have value if you do both sets of ATPLs and get both EASA and CAA CPL ME/IR. So it's not just the cost of the second Class 1, but you'll be paying for two sets of ATPL sittings and then the hassle of getting the joint EASA/CAA CPL. It requires an instructor and examier who can do both, and the EASA IR requires some hours in EASA airspace, so a quick flight over to France or Ireland. Could easily be an extra few thousand onto training costs for both and that's hard to justify. I went for it because I have both UK and EU passports. Once you have them you have to keep currency for both!

AND you'll need to renew both medicals every year which will be £300-£400ish.

If you can pass a CAA Class 1 initial then you'll pass an EASA Class 1 initial. If you don't have an EU passport the EASA licence has limited value for now, hopefully things will change in the future. My advice would be to get the CAA Class 1 then do your PPL and get started on hour building, then make a decision on whether or not to sit both sets of ATPLs and if you do, go get an EASA Class 1 in Poland.

Modular is getting expensive now in the UK. For just the CAA CPL fATPL you're looking at £65k minimum if you account for exam fees, landing fees, licence fees and equipment. Bad enough without trying to chuck an EASA licence on top.

Given the likely thousands and thousands of applications, I wouldn't be surprised if they can't get through every digial interview. I'm sure they're looking forward to getting it finished just as much as we are :p This is basically like entering a pilot lottery!
In the mean time for anyone in need of an aviation fix and dreaming of flying big jets, you can book a discovery fight in a local flying school and get to actually fly a plane for around £200 and you can record that in a logbook as your first hour!

I heard a rumour on the grape vine from a friend of a friends mate down the pub.... That things might be changing with this dual licensing mess and the CAA are likely to re-enter EASA membership. Could be a load of BS and will likely take years to sort out. But the advice of getting your CAA class 1 and then going for the PPL and ATPL's is very good advice at that!

I have no idea how starting your ATPL's would affect your application with TUI however. I imagine you can't start taking your exams outside of the programme.

The only whisper I've heard has been from AMEs and flight instructors. Unfortunately I think it comes from a place of hope rather than anything concrete. It will require a joint effort between the British Government and the EU before the CAA and EASA have a say, so I wouldn't hold out for anything soon. We'll hear from official sources long before there ever is an agreement.

Another path is to start training for a PPL then get your Class 2 initial once you're ready for your first solo flight. Class 2 initial is £250 and lasts 5 years if you're under 40. Then if you want to continue after PPL, get a Class 1 initial. Even the PPL is a lot of work for the exams and puts many off continuing to ATPLs.

The FAQ on the TUI page states it's okay to have some ATPLs under your belt but you'll have to resit them as part of the course. You can start studying without signing up to a course by buying PadPilot textbooks on iBooks. They're around £30 each and well written with pretty diagrams!

Where did you hear it’s end of March now out of interest? I didn’t get any other emails since the one stating mid-March?

FYI - you can check the status of your application by clicking the link in the email titled "TUI Profile Confirmation" you will have recieved when you first applied. It will show a status under Jobs Applied once you login.

Dont worry! I panicked when I saw the same as you, I emailed them and they assured me that my application was all complete - if you’ve done the 3 assessments + digital interview, you’re all sorted. Just a waiting game now…

In this email (15th March), they said “You’ll receive an email in the next few weeks communicating the outcome of your application”. So will most likely be end of March/early April.

Thank you, I thought it would be alright because it says the tests/ Interview have been completed on the platform we did them on. But it was at the back of my mind. Your post has definitely made me happier about it. I definitely appreciate it!

I haven't received any email on 15th, is a time I should start panicking? lol
