I’m one of the lucky ones. I was first paid to fly in late 1976 (RAF). I’ve stayed in the industry ever since. Although I’ve never chased the airline route and the bigger money, I’ve never done a ground job since then, never been unemployed and I’ve never paid for a type rating. I’ll be hanging up my flying kit in the next couple of years. I have no plans to fly for recreation after that. I’m sad to say that I think the best days of aviation have gone. None of my offspring have gone into the aviation business and I’m quite relieved that they haven’t. If I had my own time again I wouldn’t change a thing but my advice to anyone wanting a good career is to go into engineering. There’s a worldwide shortage of engineers and a surplus of pilots. |
