Angry got a JAR frozen ATPL. Now what ?

I was a happy PPL. I got a JAR frozen ATPL (total 500h) because there is supposed to be a pilot shortage. Thats what most instructors (even some chief pilots !) told me.
The JAR ATPL wasn't cheap (50k) and wasn't easy since i worked full-time at the same time.
I sent hundreds of CVs to Uk and European companies in the last six months with not even one interview !
The replies ask for 1500 Total minimum, a type and 200h jet . Its worse than in the USA. At least there you can find a commuter job or something like that (with a lousy pay i agree).
What i am supposed to do now ? instruction is not an option since i have a family to feed. I had also to drop a good upper management position at the end to finish the IR.

sorry to hear that,
I warned you about the situation in europe, noone wants listen to me.
I give you a good advise, keep your money, keep your licenses current, if there is a shortage of pilot in the next 2-3 years, they will call you.
don t fall in the trap MCC, t/rating....what you need is a connection. you are not the only one to be stuk with an ATP JAR frozen.
And come sometimes to the USA to build time, it s cheap and really fun.

Red face

Steady on sideslip.

Where as I agree with most of what you say (not the language mind you), my stance with ronch is a bit like with attention seeking kids - the best way is to simply ignore them, they soon realise that they are waisting their time.

Stop feeding his fire. You're being baited.

I know i need hours but when will it stop ?
Instructing is not an option, i have to earn a living. this JAR atpl already cost me a fortune.
From my estimates, 500 hours were not so bad in Europe. It seems in Europe you need the license AND the hours (at least 1500 ) or be the chief pilots daughter best friend!

Ronchonner : i have flown in the US as ppl some years ago, when the dollar was really cheap. I enjoyed it. Now the dollar exchange rate is not very favourable. Also, without a green card you are going nowhere in the US, or you have to marry a yank woman.
I dont think the situation is much better in the US especially for an European.

I got a job with only 350 hours, some I know had less - it can be done. Don't give up, stay current and keep the c.v.'s and phone calls going.

That's some effort. Which school did you learn at?

piperindian -

Both Ronny and seadog give good advice. Keep that licence current, keep on pegging away, and pop on over to the states to build time now and again, when funds permit. This last bit will help you remember why you started this long trip in the first place! Keep your name and profile high with the operators, you will get in eventually!

Oh, and don't listen to the likes of Slipslide, or you'll just slide away! In this game it's as important to know who to listen to, and who not!!

Piper

I have to work during the week as well

- I instruct at the weekends

It keeps me current and builds hours - you
need to have some currency as well as the total hours in my opinion

I know its not easy

Do Not Quit
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must - but do not quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Do not give up, though the pace seems slow -
You might succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you are hardest hit
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
Bovey

Welcome to aviation.

My advice is that day by day you becoming less current and generally between you and someone who has just come out of Oxford say today they will go for him. Also been told that after 6-9months you are unemployable.

Advice mate don't bother with the US for hour building anyonw with a bit of £££ or $$$ can do that, but go and get an instructors rating. You get paid for flying and it is good fun, keeps yoyu current and you make contacts. Thats how I did it and now flying a lovely turboprop for a reasonable airline.

One last word I am sick and tired of people moaning why they can't get a job when they are actively not trying (OK I know you have been sending out CV's). People need to get off their a*** anddo something about it and I wish people would change their attitudes on flying instruction. I know which people are laughing when the other guy is not getting a job!!!

Good luck

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I quess it is one of those things in this industry but you have to just keep going. You mave the key to the door dont lose it before you find the right door! You have to keep those rating current or you dont stand a chance. Email, write, ring, go to see, etc etc.
I have an excel database suitable for mail merge of all the UK based airlines and the right contact person inc tel numbers etc. There are about 120 companies on it, if you or anyone else would like it email me and I will send it. Just dont give up it could be the next phone call or the next letter, and one day it will be!

As for Sideslip- grow up people are looking for support and ideas not juvenile comments, remember it could be you in the position! And if thats your attitude it probably will be!!!!!

Stop and review Ronchonner's post

Is that he's first sensible reply or is it just me?

In addition to keeping current, there is no harm done in following up on the application you've sent. Select those where you think you have the best shot and call them regularly or better yet pay them a visit from time to time. Try to fly as often as possible - when you are called to an interview some day you don't want you last logbook entry being 6 months old. If you can't afford flying privately try to contact some parachute clubs and see if they need someone - that should be possible along side a fulltime job.
