In addition to keeping current, there is no harm done in following up on the application you've sent. Select those where you think you have the best shot and call them regularly or better yet pay them a visit from time to time. Try to fly as often as possible - when you are called to an interview some day you don't want you last logbook entry being 6 months old. If you can't afford flying privately try to contact some parachute clubs and see if they need someone - that should be possible along side a fulltime job.
