Arrow Final Board let down, what next?

Just got that dreaded letter from BA saying I was unsucessful at the final board. Very dissapointed as it has now set me back a year. I WILL BE A PILOT!!!!!

Is there any other airline currently offering sponsorship, full or part? What's the story with Aer Lingus?

I'm graduating from Uni in a month, I've got a job for next year, but I'd rather be flying. Is there any other way in?

Cheers

Aer Lingus aren't recruiting at present. Their board of directors have banned all recruitment except to fill positions of any staff who retire/leave. Therefore, no recruitment for CEP! Bit of a bummer - narrows down all UK citizens options to BA for full sponsorship, and with competition for that being 40,000 people for about 200 places not many of us will get that!

Where do you get your figures from? I'm not disputing them, but 40,000 applicants does seem a lot.

See if you can get a flying related job, hell why not apply to work for British Airways!

Anyway, no-one seems to know if Aer Lingus are going to recruit cadets this year. To be honest it seems unlikely but all you can do is check the website each day. I am not sure but I was told they advertise there and in the Irish national press, but only for a few days.

In autumn bmi british midland will open the floodgates for their partial sponsorships so keep your eyes peeled and get that subscription to Flight International- you get the mag one day before it hits the shops.

Air 2000 will also advertise in Autumn for part sponsored candidates. Both the above schemes are GOOD!

Last year British European also advertised in Autumn for part sponsorships so watch out. KLMuk are taking on students for a join sponsorship with Cabair, so watch FI for that as well.

Airtours also advertised last autumn, although in the recent business press they announces huge losses, so I don't know if that affects cadet recruitment.

Dragon Air of Hong Kong advertised for cadets not so long ago, and that seemed good, but you need the unrestricted right to live in Hong Kong (which is now much harder than it used to be) to apply.

If you speek French or German then Air France and Lufthansa do sponsorships...

Phew....and finally, GAPAN (The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators) offer one scholarship each year and this is HUGE! One candidate gets a totally free Frozen ATPL, training at BAE in Jerez. Check their webpage www.gapan.org for info.

And that's probably your lot.

You've got the right attitude so keep working at it!!

GOOD LUCK,

SB

Okay, the actual figures for British Airways cadets are that:

1 in 33 applicants make it in.

But, it can be done!

The figure was around 30,000 initial enquiries which resulted in sending out an application form. Of those, x% were actually returned etc etc, cutting down the numbers until 200 or so are offered places on sponsorships. Pretty much the same as most top graduate jobs.

My figures came from a cadet on ap191 at Oxford (one of the BA courses). I did of course mean that 40,000 applications were sent out - with only about 75% returned apparently!! Sorry for the confusion. Either way, 40,000:200 or 30,000:200 is still pretty high competition.

Anyway, I got into Imperial when competition is about 12:1, I CAN make BA!!

Red face

Speedbird, just to clarify the Airtours situation for yourself and others reading your "information"...

they want sponsored people to start in Jerez possibly as early as Nov. this year, so expect them to advertise a little sooner than last year, maybe July. Its a quick open and shut application process, so once you see the ad in FI, dont hang around - expect to need a class 1 medical aswell.

As for "huge financial losses" I dont want to bore people with financial dross of buyouts and selling of tour operators etc, but the airline side of the business is absolutely fine. Maybe thats why theyre getting a mix of 18 or so new A320's & 21's over the next 2 years. (just a bit of info for your final interview!)

Cheers.

Be sure to call the recruitment centre and ask to speak to the HR interviewer. Ask him/her politely for the exact reasons why you didn't get in - have a pen and paper handy and scibble down exactly what they say. This is because they assess you on a number of different topics, e.g. appearance, motivation and determination, empathy with colleagues, teamwork etc etc and you need to know where you showed a weakness in their eyes. You need to score high on every topic and any doubts in one area will normally rule you out. The exercise is totally process-driven so you win a place through your ability to give the correct answer or recall the perfect "anecdote" when prompted with the question: "Give us an example of where you ........" Next step is to get "Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions" by Martin John Yate - ISBN 0-7494-3552-6. Armed with the BA feedback and the priceless information in this book you will then be much better prepared for your next attempt to get in. DO NOT ACCEPT DEFEAT.

Question

Sorry to hear about that Bogsey.

I'm actually interested in some of the other part sponsorships, in addition to BA - will be a pilot one way or another! Does anyone know the extent of the BMI sponsorship, or the Air2000 one for that matter. Also, I have a feeling that the KLMuk/Cabair one has actualy passed a month or two ago... but don't quote me on that.

Cheers
Bunty
