There is no competition between sexes in aviation unless you people make one. I have taught many people of both sexes and, while it is true some generalisations can genuinely made of either, I cannot hold my hand on my heart and say that one sex is better than the other - in this field. So, while it amuses many to make jokes about the issue, I think we should celebrate the fact that this is one of few occupations where women can compete on equal grounds. Frankly, I have no problems with that.

Scroggs is quite correct, over the years I have seen no difference in the abilities of either sex when it comes to operating aircraft. It is not a skill that requires physical strength, only reasonable hand/eye co-ordination, the ability to think ahead and good situational awareness. Flying is not a difficult discipline and can be learned by most people, as can the operation of most transport machinery eg; cars, motor-bikes etc.
To be gifted, or excellent is not required for normal commercial operation, this is an ability reserved for aerobatic champions, front line fighter-pilots, grand-prix motorcyclists and formula 1 racing-drivers.
The majority of people can be trained to fly to the required standard for public transport work there is no mystery, flying airliners is not difficult. However, take heart ladies, if two equally qualified persons apply for the same position, current practise[not policy] favours your goodselves.
Cheers.

I absolutley agree with Scroggs and RG500.
ALL jobs should appoint people with regard to their qualities and suitability for the position. The idea of quotas in some proffessions is a cover up for reverse discrimination. It should be one rule for all, with no exceptions.
It's still good fun winding people up though (and being wound up, Distaff!)

I agree entirely with the last few postings. I am very much against, "affirmative action", "positive discrimination", "quotas for race or gender" or anything similar.
It may appeal to some people who see it as a quick fix, to righting previous discrimination. But IMHO, all it leads to is making a different section of the community resentful, as they are now suffering unfair discrimination.
Furthermore it belittles the person who benefits, from the new system. I, & I expect, a lot of other women, would not be happy to be appointed to an job, if we felt is was purely as a "token women", or because another female was needed to comply with an anti-discrimination audit quota.
I only want to accept a job, where I believe that I have got there on my own merits, even if that does mean that I have to demonstrate that I am better than the fellas! (Bow5 .. this bit is a joke )

To get back to the original question that started this thread, I'm happy to stand up and be counted as another female wannabe. This should be obvious from my name; Whirly Bird = female helicopter pilot - but some people don't seem to realise that.
Apart from that I'm getting sick of women pilot threads that crop up with monotonous regularity every month or so. Women have been getting pilots licences for over 90 years. When oh when is it going to be considered as normal as women teachers or doctors or cleaners or workers in MacDonalds, and not even mentioned?

Interesting thread! But let's please not get into the old race/gender "positive discrimination" debate as it always causes upset on here.
Fact 1: Men and Women are different, they have different strengths and weaknesses.
Fact 2: This means men and women make different pilots not necessarily better than men.
I think that men are more confident and have better reactions and hand to eye co-ordination than women (in general). But this is balanced by women's perhaps more balanced approach to a task like flying which as been said is not inherently difficult.
Compare it to driving (which is a different but not unrelated skill) - yes men have more accidents because of cockiness but in my opinion have greater car control than women - women's accidents tend to be caused by indecisiveness. In my opinion this makes men technically better drivers, if they keep their confidence in check.
Flying is male dominated profession so good luck to the women wannabes - in some cases being female has distinct advantages.

Men do have more accidents in cars than woman but there are more men drivers , driving almost 3 times more miles and at an overall greater speed .
It's a fact of life that woman do tend to do the school run and go to the supermarket so we can deduce that Men have accidents because they are over confident and drive to fast and woman crash because they are not as confident and are not thinking about the task in hand .
I dont care if there are more woman pilots or not.
I have no problem with woman in authority( my wife was my boss when she ordered me to go out with her

But I know , because I have seen it first hand recently , that some women pilots in this male orintated world can take advantage by using their sexuallity .I certainly could not flert with my instructor .And he would never do a walk around an A/C in the rain that i was about to fly.
If there is no problem with woman pilots , then why is there a big fan fair when BA or a local airline takes one on , or they become the first captain of the first all woman multi crew .
It seems that airlines , media and women are out to prove something that everyone reguardless of sex already new . And that is women can do anything they wont to equally as well as men .
My only gripe is with people , M or F , who cannot be bothered to get off their fat arses and make something of them selves instead of sitting around bemoaning all day about all men are this or all women are that and I've been delt a crap hand in my life and what am I gonna do till eastenders is on , moaning and groaning and grimercing untill mucas is dripping from their mangled membranes and their splenes are slattered oozing goo and puwtrid snot .................Dead!
Anyway must go , tea's ready.
