Pan Am and Comair Academy

Has anyone got any information about these two FTO's? They look quite interesting but as with a lot of websites there is not mention of prices and they only give minimal information about the courses.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Merry XMAS

Hi PWP

Comair do indeed offer a seat on one of their flights if available, to view their establishment and to have a tour of the facilities. From my knowledge, Comair is apparently a great school, and I am actually thinking of going there myself, so If I here anything else, I'll let you know. Don't know much about Pan Am I'm afraid, but people here generally have good words to say about it. Good luck with whoever you choose.

Chers

PWP Do you have a green card or US Passport? If not, are you aware you cannot work there; you'll be able to do some work experience as a flying instructor following your FAA courses (assuming work available, but don't expect to be paid much), but you'll be on a flight home when your student visa expires? You'll then need to do a JAA licence conversion. That's now simpler and less expensive than it was, but you'll still have to do all the JAA groundschool.

Some airlines here are not so keen on this route; many people have to spend a little time working their way 'up' to an airline job here so it can be quite a slow route if you are in a rush for that 737 job. On the other hand, if you don't have commitments, cannot get sponsorship and have limited cash, it's requires less capital than some other routes.

Piper Warrior Pilot,

Comair offers a space available roundtrip ticket to visit their facilities in Orlando. I've only ever heard of people coming from other cities in the U.S, but since it's free standby travel on Delta (or any Delta Connection airline), I don't see why they can't provide travel from the U.K.
I'd call them up and see what they can do for you. Phone number is 1-800-8226359 (UCANFLY).

Thumbs up v. impressed with Comair

Dear all,

I've just spent a week in Florida with specific purpose of visiting Comair to help me decide if I want to go there in the Spring. Spent a lot of time talking to various people there and am v impressed with their set up. A few comments on the above thread which you may find helpful:

1. They do a full time modular JAA course. So no conversion required on return to UK. Talk to Chris McShea on the free phone number above. He emailed me details of the courses (pdf format). At end of the 2 years (or sooner if required) you do IR and MCC at Coventry back in UK to complete the course.

2. J1 visa allows a 24 month visit during which time you can work as a flight instructor after completing relevant ratings. Approx $10 per hour but important experience building time.

3. Excellent student support infrastructure. If I go out in April I will take a young family so I want to be sure that we'll be looked after. We (me and wife) were v impressed with level of practical care offered to students to help them settle into the area.

4. I spoke to several Brits at Comair - all speak v highly of it. The first JAA 'professional pilot programme' is under way - next course due for kick off in April as far as I understand.

5. Nice place to live. Spent a few days being tourists. Good area. Wonderful to get some bright sunshine and decent temperatures for a few days. Met Mickey Mouse - what more can you ask for?

6. I did not get refund on air fare but was told that if I sign-up it will be credited as flying time. Sounds good to me.

Hope this helps a bit. Give them a call - no excuse not to cos it's a freephone number.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year to all,

DAL

PS Mickey passes on his regards.

PWP:
I went down to London in September (i think) to see Comair, and I must say that as cynical as I am, I think that their scheme works out to be an OK deal.
They will fly you over from the UK to have a look round, but only give you the money back if you sign up, and only up to a certain value.
I was looking at doing the FI course, but had too much flying to get a visa to stay there and instruct, would have done it otherwise.

Good luck.
