Wink Positivity and Determination

Guys and Gals

Having suffered numerous rejections (job-related not in my love life!) I can appreciate how low people can get and how important Pprune can be in keeping people determined and focused and with hope. Having got rejected again recently, one of my friends - a fellow Ppruner sent me an e-mail.

I thought it was such a good e-mail that I would post the edited version on the site (I hope you don't mind -you know who you are.)

Some of you may wonder why I am bothering but it made me smile and lifted my spirits just to know that
a) people you hardly know but are in the same boat are rooting for you
b) A lot of people are in the same boat and if we can help each other get through the down times then we can all enjoy the good times.

I hope all wannabees get some benefit from this letter. After all it can't rain all the time...

(...)I know it’s easy for me to say that, but if experience has taught me anything, it’s; (a) that you can find something positive in just about any experience and; (b) that if you really want something, you don’t ever give up until you’ve got it. It all depends on your attitude really.

Also, the message I’ve got from every commercial pilot I’ve ever spoken to is that the one thing that will get you through is determination. (You’ll note that they all rate determination as more important than money). More than likely you’ll go through a world of crap - and much worse knock-backs than this - before you get your first airline job – it comes with the territory.

I remember applying for (I.T.) graduate training schemes a couple of years ago, and being rejected before I’d even got to an interview, purely because I wasn’t as good at answering all the psychometric ‘Would you rather be a cow or a tree?’ questions as a load of fresh faced graduates. Did it piss me off? Of course. Did it stop me? Nope.

I’m resigned to paying the whole lot myself, to spending 3-5 years with no money and the next 10 years with a mountain of debt. However, I know I’m going to do it, because flyings what I want to do, and the one thing I’m absolutely certain of is that I aint gonna spend the remaining 30 years of my working life catching the 07:37 Laindon to Fenchurch St. Remember, you only get one shot at life, and you’re gonna be dead an awful long time!

Who ever sent you that is a good friend to have.

Everyone must pause for a moment after every set back and thats when a freinds support is priceless. Reading something like that does help you re-motivate yourself dosen't it. Thanks for posting it for us all to share.

Martinf matey,

For free motivation you can't beat getting yourself down to Hatton Cross tube station, and standing at the approach end of 27L for a couple of hours. Just look up at them and you'll know that one day it'll be you.

Works for me every time, and it's a lot cheaper than endless circuits in a C152!

Wow, that's some friend you have there.

I have to say that I am also determined to reach my goal, no matter how ridiculous it may seem. I am a student in Idaho with the hopes of reaching Hawaii to fly with Aloha Airlines, or perhaps Hawaiian if they'll take me, and I'll stop at nothing to reach my goal.

I keep getting told that I will never have the money. That there's no way I'll be focused enough to reach the goal. And I am also aware of how hard an airline interview can be. But no matter WHAT may stand in my way, I know that if I DO remain focused and DO NOT give up, I will reach my goal.

I can think of nothing better to kiss the tropical skies in the plane I love the most. I'd be perfectly happy, even if the airline might give me a bit of bull!!!!!.

It's what I want to do and I will never give up.

Aloha 737-200!!

Good on ya boy (or girl?).

Yep life is hard and sometimes unsatisfying but it's just one day at a time.

In the end you'll look back and go WOW, I did all that just to get here. Excellant.

Go for it I say and don't let anything or anybody hold you back.

Sounds like a good idea G-SXTY!!

I will when I get into London again.

You all are right it is good to have somebody e-mail you that kind of advice. I think that is one of the most important things they don't teach you with your flying that Life does suck and you are going to get rejected and face strife. The most important thing is to moope about it for a day, then get up the next few days and get on with it.

YOU WILL GET KNOWCKED BACK - IF YOU CAN GET UP AND GET ON WITH IT IT WILL MAKE YOU STRONGER AND NOTHING WILL BE CHANGED BY YOU MOANING ABOUT IT.

It still sucks though....
