Guys and Gals
Having suffered numerous rejections (job-related not in my love life!) I can appreciate how low people can get and how important Pprune can be in keeping people determined and focused and with hope. Having got rejected again recently, one of my friends - a fellow Ppruner sent me an e-mail.
I thought it was such a good e-mail that I would post the edited version on the site (I hope you don't mind -you know who you are.)
Some of you may wonder why I am bothering but it made me smile and lifted my spirits just to know that
a) people you hardly know but are in the same boat are rooting for you
b) A lot of people are in the same boat and if we can help each other get through the down times then we can all enjoy the good times.
I hope all wannabees get some benefit from this letter. After all it can't rain all the time...
(...)I know it’s easy for me to say that, but if experience has taught me anything, it’s; (a) that you can find something positive in just about any experience and; (b) that if you really want something, you don’t ever give up until you’ve got it. It all depends on your attitude really.
Also, the message I’ve got from every commercial pilot I’ve ever spoken to is that the one thing that will get you through is determination. (You’ll note that they all rate determination as more important than money). More than likely you’ll go through a world of crap - and much worse knock-backs than this - before you get your first airline job – it comes with the territory.
I remember applying for (I.T.) graduate training schemes a couple of years ago, and being rejected before I’d even got to an interview, purely because I wasn’t as good at answering all the psychometric ‘Would you rather be a cow or a tree?’ questions as a load of fresh faced graduates. Did it piss me off? Of course. Did it stop me? Nope.
I’m resigned to paying the whole lot myself, to spending 3-5 years with no money and the next 10 years with a mountain of debt. However, I know I’m going to do it, because flyings what I want to do, and the one thing I’m absolutely certain of is that I aint gonna spend the remaining 30 years of my working life catching the 07:37 Laindon to Fenchurch St. Remember, you only get one shot at life, and you’re gonna be dead an awful long time!
