Class 1 Medical Years Before I Need It
Hi everyone,
Just getting back into my flying after a long time out, my class 2 expires in January so I'm going to need to renew it however I was wanting to take my class 1 medical just to be sure I could see the training through to the commercial side. Only issue is I'm not going to be leaving my current job for at least another 4-5 years and the thought of having to renew it every year for close to £200 is a bit silly to me. I was wondering if it's practical to get my class 1 for this year to know I can make the standard, then just go off my class 2 for the next 5 years and revalidate the class 1 when it comes to doing my CPL etc if that's possible? Would appreciate any help or advice

I wish that was possible but I’m doing a degree apprenticeship with a good enough wage to pay my flying, doesn’t end for another 4-5 years and I’m certainly not gonna give it up.

It sounds like you're planning on piggy-backing the class 2 privileges off the class 1. Yes, this is do-able as your certificate will contain class 1 and 2 expiry dates. Just make sure you renew your class 1 within 5 years otherwise you have to take an initial all over again.

Absolutely get the Class 1 now, make sure there isn’t anything underlying that would stop you getting a Class 1 at a later date. Then let the Class 1 lapse and fly on Class 2 privileges (which the Class 1 gives you) and then just make sure you book the Class 1 renewal before the 5 year mark.
It might cost you the price of a renewal more than not getting it but you don’t want to invest time and money if the Class 1 threw up something unusual.
That would be my advice.
