Who's the youngest captain flying for a major?

If you are asking about airline commanders and not armed forces commanders then, and I don't know for sure but seeing as there is a lack of replies to your question I may as well offer some opinion, probably around the 24-25 yr old mark at a push although I can't say for certain. Youngest captain in wartime was probably aroung the 18-19 yr old mark. Rough estimates.
Maybe someone will pipe up and correct me now!

I have heard a Captain on the 747 Classic with Virgin being only 26. I think this is quite a few years ago but he obviously started early since he was an F/O on the DC-9 when he was just 19!

I was a C130 captain at 25, and there were others at Lyneham younger than me. At Virgin, we've had one or two 747 captains in their 20's.
This topic really ought to be in 'Questions', but I'll let it run for now!

Slighty off topic, but prompted by VFE, taken from a post read on pprune recently.
The youngest wartime captain joined the RAF at about 15yrs 4mths (fibbed about his age abit) flew his first operational missions over Germany in a Halifax bomber at about 15yrs 10mths, ended up being discharged after his Mum blew the whistle having seen his photo in the national news papers shaking the Kings hand during a base visit. He had told her he was on a cadet scheme.
A brave man in dangerous days.
cheers

Hung Start,
CFE no longer exists, it is presently being integrated with BA, so I guess that would count as a major?
There is another RJ pilot who has (I believe) just been promoted at age 23. I remember when he joined he couldn't get an ATPL issued because he wasn't old enough!

Purple Yetti, would you care to tell us all how you got your licence, etc. as you must have done it very cheaply which would be of interest to everyone on this forum, or else you have rich parents!!
I know I couldn't afford to pay for flight tests and exams when I was 18.

Grandad Flyer,
Be delighted to. Certainly dont have rich parents, but did have their support right the way through it all which as many of you out there will appreciate is as important.
Was one of the very lucky few who was offered sponsorship by Atlantic Airlines, was taken on whilst still studying for my A'levels at 6th form, and went straight into ATPL ground school. FO on the electra at 19 (after being an instructor for 9 months), just got my left seat before christmas.
Got my PPL at 17 by working every spare hour in Tesco's and a local Flying School, recieving tuition rather than payment.
Thats basically it, very very lucky. I appreciate the fact that without such good luck, and the sponsorship scheme, would most likely still be mudling through now.
The very best of good luck to all out there trying to make it into the front seat, whatever your age.
