Hiya Josh,

Good on you for taking the time to research flying.

It is a great profession and I promise you that you'll learn something new everyday. The people (your future colleagues) are great too - everybody comes from different backgrounds so there's always lots to talk about when time allows.

As other people have said; listen to your teachers and do your class/homework to the best of your ability - this will allow you to get good grades in your SATs, GCSE's and A Level's and this proves to training organisations like Oxford or Flight Training Europe that you can be taught. This gets you in the door (plus money too unfortunately). Then once you're in try your hardest to pass your flying exams (theoretical and practical) first time as this helps with getting a recommendation to an airline.

Then its about taking it one day at a time, listening to and learning from different peoples opinions and tips, doing well in your simulator assessments, truly being a team player and one day that fourth stripe will be yours.

Good luck Josh.

Can a Mod please explain why my post has been removed from this thread – to the best of my knowledge, I merely articulated that this was a pleasant post, and advised this young chap to study hard at school! Have I contravened some rule, alternatively, use of inappropriate language?

I would be grateful of an explanation – Many thanks!

Restored. There was a bit of modding on the fly taking place as people either bickering or running down the future of the profession was not really helpful or in the spirit of the thread.

Good luck Josh. Best piece of advice I ever got was from an indulgent RAF Careers Officer when I was 12 and my Dad took me in to see them. It was: Join The Air Cadets.

I did that, enjoyed it, did well and that easily (and cheaply) launched my professional flying career though sadly not to the RAF's benefit (well maybe so - actually ) anway, the important thing is that at a young age you have a lofty but attainable goal. From that flows much which will be good in your life.

I deleted your post in error - sorry. There was a number of posts advocating the use of MS flight sim of Flight sim - a topic that has been done to death here many times over.

Hello Josh,

I am 19 and just starting the journey towards the dream we all share on this forum. Firstly I would just like to say that I'm amazed at how grown up and focused you are for being a 10 year old lad. When I was 10 I was still pulling worms out the ground and chasing girls round with them!

I cannot agree more with the advice that seems to be the theme here which is join the air cadets. I joined up when I was 13, and had the best three years of my life. At 13 I was sitting in a Grob Tutor at RAF Leeming getting strapped in for a flight only a few months after I'd flown in an airliner for the first time, something which I personally believe most 13 year old lads who arent in cadets can only dream of and thats only the beginning.

Stick in at school too, mind looking at the quality of your written english at 10, you seem to have that covered already!

Good luck and best wishes.
(Good luck with getting your own pup too!)

Delightful

Hi Josh

I have to say I think this thread is a great thread you have started. You have a great attitude. Well done on a very mannerly, articulate, respectful and mature post.

If only some of the older wannabe's on this site would take a leaf out of your book!

The piece of advice I would like to give you is, if you are faced with options of different subjects in school make sure Maths and Physics are included in your choices. Also keep your delightful personality and build on it as you grow older and try keeping that inquisitive nature you have throughout your education and carry it forward into your aviation career in many years to come.

Lastly take the time to enjoy your life as you learn and work towards your dream. Don’t be in too much of a hurry to get there. There are lots of lessons life has to offer. Learn from the them and take your experiences from everyday life with you as you go.

Education is important but there is more to education than subjects, education extends to life and personality.

Keep that positive, gracious attitude mate it will take you far and all the best to you for your future and dreams!!

Take Care

Apologies all...

For I am somewhat in wine...

However, I'd like to congratulate all posters for their friendly and positive responses with regards to JoshB.

This place can come across as a bit of a bear-pit to the newcomer, so it's really heartening to read this stuff.

Conversely, I suspect this apparently bright young bloke had a bit of a read before posting, and so knew what might happen. Brave move JoshB, well done.

A tear wells. Seriously. Good work.

Hi

I've got into the school that has Air Cadets in that many of you have said I should join when I'm 13/older . Thank you very much for the advice I can't wait.

On Wednesday I went to "The Spirit of Soccer" Festival. Me and 6 other children went to the tournament that was a 5 aside but we took 7. We won the first game after I scored, 2nd game we drew, 3rd game we won 2-0 thanks to me and the captain, 4th match we drew, 5th match we won 3-0 but I didnt score. There were 2 groups, we came first in ours and got to the final but unfortunately we were beat 1 nil. I could have scored but the goalkeeper stopped me from getting my foot in the right place. The next day the headmaster congratulated the team and told everyone who the captain was, he didnt mention me or the rest of the team so I was a bit sad but I tried to think of it as you have said about being a team player.

Did anyone see "Are you Smarter" on Sky 1 today? Dick and Dom were taking the mickey out of my Airlifes Register of Aircraft Accidents. They asked me to tell them about a crash but the contestant worked for BA so I had to give them another airline.

Thank you again for the advice since my last post. Cant wait to be 13

Hi

Good for you Josh and as has been mentioned before being brave to post on here. And what a post it was.

I remember when I was a kid I was always down the airport with my Dad watching and trying to take as much is as my little mind would. I fly a lot out of Shoreham now and iv noticed the lack of the younger people being around watching, learning, which I think is a great shame, I think I had more frineds at the airport then I did at school. I guess things change.

I know Fltsim is not looked on here to well but I would just like to say how useful I found it, not for the flying as such, but more so for my RT when I was doing my PPL. I am not the most convenient of people and my RT was poor to say the least, but after signing up to a well know network and joined a VFR club all for free I should add, my RT improved no end. I went from only just being able to get taxi clearance to now being able to fly, and do the RT most my way round Europe, properly for most of you guys here that is nothing but has been a great achievement for me. I am now one sitting away form passing my ATPL ground exams and hope to start my CPL/IR in June. I not sure if its a good idea or not but I was thinking about using FS for some of the IR work, Practicing holds and procedures etc...?

I am not going to get into the whole Fltsim thing as I know what will follow, but it did me no harm and was free and helped a lot.

Im sure if you "Google" "VFR club flight sim" you will find it

Good luck Josh.

Josh,

A note about school career advisers. Basically when I was at school I also wanted to become an airline pilot in the future. Multiple career advisers told me various pieces of incorrect information including such nonsense as needing to have a degree in aeronautical engineering to become a pilot.... they managed to convince me that it was an impossibility, so I gave up on the idea.

Later on at university I came across Pprune and reading through the forums made me realise that it was indeed a possibility.

4 years later I was teaching beginners how to fly little aircraft, the year after flying Airbus 320s. It was hard work, but worth it in the end.

As already noted there is a mixed bag of information on these forums, some great, some bad. Overall though I think these forums can be an invaluable resource for you

Good luck!

Josh always stay safe online

Josh
Well done with your soccer and your right its being part of the team that counts!

I’m sure your parents have explained to you the potential dangers of stranger especially in public. We were all told as children never to accept sweets or offers from strangers in public.

The same thing goes online; you never know who any of us strangers are here online. We may offer your advice and be friendly. Unfortunately, this is a face-less forum and none of us truly know who we are talking to for real.

Whatever you do never hand out your email address or personal information on ANY internet site, and never leave a path to your identity. Never give your personal information to strangers on the internet including here!

You are an intelligent young fellow and there is a lot more to learn of the world. If you are confused by what I am saying here ask your parents and they will understand and explain it to you.

Oh and congratulations on the school!

Take care

Hi Josh

To be a pilot you have to pass a medical examination. To have a private pilots licence where you fly for fun, this is called a class two medical, and to have a commercial pilots licence where flying is your job, it is called a class one medical. The class one medical is harder to get than the class two one, and has to be done at the CAA headquarters at Gatwick.

There are a lot of different things which are checked as part of these medicals, and lots of eyesight test are indeed part of it, so it is probably a good idea that you had the colourblindness test done.

I honestly don't think that anyone on this forum will be able to give you a definite 'yes or no' answer though, to the question you asked.

I do know of some people who were not able to become pilots because of colourblindness, but everybody is different, and I think there are different types of colourblindness, so it might depend on what type you have.

I also know of some people with colourblindness who were able to get a class two medical and were able to become private pilots.

You could try putting a post on the medical forum here, as it is all about different questions to do with health and reasons for passing or not passing the medical, but I think personally that to get a definite answer, you would have to talk to somebody in person.

There are doctors called Aviation Medical Examiners all around the country who do medical examinations for pilots and might be able to answer your question. Your local flying school would be able to give you details of the doctors near you or you might be able to find their details on the internet.

I wish you the very best Josh!
