Is there's away to do it cheaper (out of Europe)

Hello,

My boyfriend just completed his ATPL Ground Training Course (14 JAA papers) from Oxford. He was self funded. He just told me that to go for the next level, it would cost him almost to Euros200,000 (in Spain..ouch! that's quite a lot of $$$$)

My question is, does he have to do it all the way in Europe to get his commercial pilot licence, my understanding from him, wherever you go and do your study i.e. in Australia, you still have to do some hours conversion to get it recognized by UK/EU standards.

Does anyone know any other 'reasonable' cost that he could still pursue his study and not having to bear that much of monies.

thanks in advance

P.S: He doesn't know that am here and doing some online/desk research for him, feel a bit hopeless since he really wants to achieve his dreams to become a commercial pilot

Not sure what he's looking to spend 200k Euro (£170k) on?!? You could carry out out an integrated course twice with that money!

I'd imagine to carry out the HB, CPL, MEP, MEIR & MCC he would need less than 35,000 Euro?

Why doesn't he know, that is, why haven't you told him?

If your boyfriend has passed his ATPL exams, I would assume that he has done his own research as to which training and licence he wants to obtain. There's no point obtaining a USA licence if you have no right to work there. If you want to convert a USA licence to a European licence, you need to add conversion costs. I am sure your boyfriend has done this already. Perhaps he has already read Pprune!!

Cheers

Thats an extortionate amount of money to finish his fATPL. I dont understand the logic behind that one at all.

Theres no reason why anyone cant go from absolute zero to fATPL via a modular route here in the UK(with perhaps MEIR done in Spain) for more than 30 - 35k Sterling. You need to be a bit proactive to get cheap/free hour building with the likes of glider towing/para dropping etc but at is all perfectly achievable for those willing to put the effort in.

If he has completed the ATPL course then he must have done the PPL as well as you cant do the ATPLs without a PPL. All he needs now is CPL, IR and MCC and there`s no way on earth that those will cost him 200.000E. I have not heard of any FTO to charge such ridicolous amounts for CPL, IR and MCC. He will need to pay for type rating but only if he gets a job in the rhs.

That's inclusive of living expenses in Spain, at least for the next 11 months.

p.s: he knows now, told him. But, he believed that doing it all the way in Europe/UK is the best, and world class graded as compared to outside of Europe/UK

It still doesn't add up though.

If he went to a school like Aerodynamics Malaga: FTO and Airline company then he would be able to complete the rest of his training there (HB/CPL/MEP/MEIR/MCC).

The advert banner above suggests they can offer JAR ME/IR from 9,490E which is pretty good from what I know. It shouldn't take 11 months to complete either so more savings can be made. Of course if he's planning on staying in 5* accomodation then that will bump up the price .... but not to 200,000Euro!

Thanks for the info Alphamale, I think he should be in this forum instead of me. I will ask him to check out the website as well.

I hope this will at least give him some pointers and not having nightmares about getting those $$$$$

Unless you have crossed wires and he said 200,000 MYR ~ £36,655 / 43,280 Euro

I guess by the time he pays for flights, accomodation, food and training then that may be a more realistic figure.

Good luck.
