I seriously suggest investing in a GAPAN Assessment. The test is designed to predict your chances of getting through flight training. It does not test your personality, just your raw aptitude for high workload instrument flight but is intended for people with no (or very little) flying experience. You also get a personal de-brief by an experienced pilot who will help guide your initial decisions.

My positive experience of this test is consistent with my experience and success in more focused assessments, such as PILAPT as used by organisations such as CTC.

I got a lot out of it, I even used it to secure some funding. It went down well in my interview too.

Good luck.

GAPAN Aptitude Test

Hey guys, I've got an aptitude test at RAF Cranwell in a week or so, just wondering if anyone else is going to it on October 9th? And if you've already done this test, what can I expect and can I do any preparation for it?

Thanks,
James

I'm going. If you search the threads on here, you'll find odd bits and pieces pertaining to the tests. I gather there's not really much you can do to prepare for them, although someone likened some of the tests to brain training on Nintendo DS.

I get the impression it's hand eye co-ordination, multi-tasking, memory testing... stuff like that.

I did my GAPAN tests a couple of years ago - a good experience. No need to prep for the tests themselves (a combination of hand-eye coordination, maths and spacial awareness) but there is a good opportunity to ask lots of questions during your debrief about the aviation training industry etc so worth thinking about what you want to know in advance.

Enjoy the time you're there and listen to their advice.

Have fun, good luck.

All is good if you come out with the result you hoped for...I had a good morning there, hard work but very worthwhile and actually quite fun!

Would be very interested to hear what advice they hand out, when I was there in June I asked the person in my debrief what their opinion was with regards to starting an integrated course and they pretty much told me to go for it! Glad I didn't now though

I have my own question..

Alright, this'll sound a bit daft, but I was wondering, what does the dashing wannabe about town wear to a gig like this?

To tie, or not to tie, that is the question...

Regards all

If you paid for the test wear want you want. If someone else paid for it then probably shirt and tie. The choice is yours in the end.

It's highly unlikely you'll meet potential recruiters there. There weren't any when I did the tests about 6 years ago.

I just went comfortable and smart.

I saw jeans and t-shirt to shirt and tie. Most were somewhere in between.

Not a daft quetestion, but have it in mind that this isn't an interview, you're not being judged. I went in t-shirt and jeans so not so dashing (funily enough 6 years ago too!) and used it for what I wanted, as a means for me to assess my suitability for the game. There is no recruiting angle to this at all. Your result is between you and GAPAN only.

As for the tests, cleary some of the stuff you either can do or you can't. But my impression was that two key attributes that you can take with you on thw day are anticipation and prioritisation. You will have to make quick decisions and you will be overloaded so look ahead and don't fixate.

Can't remember the last time I enjoyed being tested. Helps that I got the result I was looking for!

Nice one, I did mine a few months back now. Just out of interest what advice did they give you in the debriefing?

Was there today too and was a very worthwhile day.

Thanks again to all that took time out for us and congratulations John on your results. I hope everyone else got the results they were looking for, and Jenny good luck in November.

Seconded!

Yes! If Jenny the RAF pilot wannabe reads this, all the best for the future! I'm sure you'll get what you want.

scwheeler, thankyou indeed. I hope you got what you wanted too.

350Z, My debrief was quite nice actually. It was less about advice, more about discussing my thoughts and plans around training and the future, in the context of my current job and family requirements. Sorry!

Regards JR

Would there be value in doing the GAPAN test if you already hold a PPL(A)? it says on the website,

It should be emphasised that the tests are designed for those with little or no flying experience. The validity of the tests declines rapidly for those who have in excess of 150 hours of pilot flying.
