Maurice Kirk is in Africa

The old aviator is still going strong and taking a break from his UK litigation.

Crossing Africa in his usual style.

Maurice about his engine failure in Khartoum yesterday! #VintageAirRally #sudan #khartoum #africa

Khartoum and mentally shaken from two 'donkey- tops (sic) ' in one week when , in the old days, that sort of thing was simply taken for granted and livend up my day!

I see he is doing his bit for 'outreach' ....

I presume he means two donkey stops.

Wouldn't be related to the high tech fuel system by any chance?

mothminor 22nd Nov 2016 09:18

Thank god our world is still enriched by characters like Maurice, good luck to him.

Mike Flynn 22nd Nov 2016 09:33

I agree Mothminor.

I wonder if he has tasked Sam Rutherford to carry his luggage to the hotel:D

Did you notice his reserve fuel tank in the last picture?

Did you notice his reserve fuel tank in the last picture?
No doubt filled from the barrel brought to the aircraft by enthusiastic aboriginals after having scouted around various local farmers who rather conveniently have stockpiles of Avgas. Or is it unwanted screenwash? But there again it could well be Curaçao, possibly for guests at his after-flight speaking events?

The lad on the left was asked about what he thought of a certain lady aviator who had recently passed by who tried to empower his sister. His English was pretty good, but he had recently learnt sign language.

Jan Olieslagers 22nd Nov 2016 11:13

I too think it is some kind of anti-freeze rather than fuel.

Mike Flynn 22nd Nov 2016 11:27

I think Maurice really needs a makeover.

To quote another famous aviator of recent times he is telling the young lady in the picture

"I'm feeling just a bit windblown, sunburnt and a bit punch drunk"

Epaulettes but no RAF brevet! I reckon he has earned the former over the years.

Epaulettes but no RAF brevet! I reckon he has earned the former over the years.
Only 3 bars too.

JW411 22nd Nov 2016 17:36

4 bars, even if you are qualified to castrate a camel, is surely over the top for a J-3 Cub?

rusty sparrow 22nd Nov 2016 18:51

Entitled to 5 bars for his L4 Cub :)

M-ONGO 22nd Nov 2016 19:38

Vintage Air Rally participant Maurice Kirk, with his 1943 Piper Cub aeroplane, has not arrived at his expected destination, Gambella, Ethiopia.

Contrary to our advice to return to Khartoum, Mr. Kirk, 72, departed Ad-Damazin, Sudan at approximately 1400 local time (1100 GMT) on the +/- 3 hour flight to Gambella. No radio communications or satellite tracking were received at any time during the flight, and his location is unknown. Mr. Kirk is a very experienced pilot, and so it is believed that he has made a precautionary landing before sunset, somewhere in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian authorities, and his family, have been informed and search and rescue procedures will begin at first light.

The VintageAirRally committee announces with regret that Maurice Kirk has had to withdraw from the Rally. This decision was taken due to a mismatch in expectations between the organisers and the participant.

We wish Maurice a safe return to Khartoum and onwards back home.

From the Vintage Air Rally fb page. Hope he's OK.

Mike Flynn 22nd Nov 2016 19:44

Par for the course.

None of us ever thought he would stick to the rules.

Probably eating a nice meal somewhere and drinking the local brew.

He will get airborne again and cause headaches for the organisers until he arrives in Cape Town.

Eccentric until the end...that's Captain Kirk.

M-ONGO 22nd Nov 2016 19:47

I do feel for Sam, but to be honest Captain Kirk's reputation precedes him. Something like this occurring was almost a given.

Mike Flynn 22nd Nov 2016 20:09

Looks like a big falling out and Kirk is making his own way to Cape Town Mongo?

M-ONGO 22nd Nov 2016 20:11

Looks that way. Two engine failures already though... Good luck to him. He needs it.

Mike Flynn 22nd Nov 2016 20:34

I am sure the old boy will make it to Cape Town.

He is free up there in the sky unlike his constant fights with the judicial system which incarcerates him routinely.

Looking closely at the picture below there appears to be a plastic drum and a couple of jerry cans in the front of the Cub? A liferaft strung above?

Where does the pilot sit?
Given his past record that aircraft could have some serious range?

robin 22nd Nov 2016 21:21

... as long as the donkey keeps going.

Hope he is ok. It isn't a nice area to put down and it could take time to find him. I hope when he 'withdrew' the Rally Organisers didn't take his tracker.

Right Hand Thread 22nd Nov 2016 21:57

I too think it is some kind of anti-freeze rather than fuel.

Why on Earth would he need anti-freeze for an air cooled engine? De-icing fluid perhaps?*

:hmm:

* Yes, I am joking.

Flyingmac 23rd Nov 2016 07:46

This statement from the organisers is unclear about whether or not he has a Tracker.

Mike Flynn 23rd Nov 2016 08:21

The story in the UK press today.
This from the Times

A British amateur pilot is missing after his light aircraft disappeared during a race in northern Africa last night.

Maurice Kirk, 72, from Taunton, Somerset, disappeared between Sudan and Ethiopia with organisers unable to contact him by radio.

The retired vet, who was a drinking partner of the late actor Oliver Reed, was attempting to fly from Crete to Cape Town in a 1943 Piper Cub.

The alarm was raised when he failed to arrive in Gambella, Ethiopia, after taking off yesterday from Sudan.

Organisers of the 8,000-mile trans-Africa rally, which involves 14 other single-engined vintage planes, had asked Mr Kirk to withdraw after he suffered engine failure on Sunday. He was forced to make an emergency landing and admitted that the experience had left him “badly shaken”. However, he vowed to continue, saying that it could be one of his “last great adventures”.

A post on the rally’s Facebook page said: “Contrary to our advice to return to Khartoum, Mr Kirk departed Ad-Damazin, Sudan, at approximately 14.00 local time on the three-hour flight to Gambella. No radio communications or satellite tracking were received at any time during the flight, and his location is unknown.

“Mr Kirk is a very experienced pilot, and so it is believed that he has made a precautionary landing before sunset, somewhere in Ethiopia.”

In February 2008 Mr Kirk was rescued in the Caribbean during an attempt to fly solo around the world in a Second World War-era aircraft. He was found 75 miles from the Dominican Republic by the US coast guard, which tracked his radio beacon.

Two months later he was arrested in Texas after landing near a ranch belonging to the former president George W Bush and was later deported.

Flyingmac 23rd Nov 2016 08:33

He's one of ours, warts and all, and I sincerely hope that he's ok.

Jetblu 23rd Nov 2016 11:20

I hope he is ok. Not a nice area for engine failures, if it was.

It could be that he was just buzzing the natives at 10 feet and decided to pop-in to a village strip for a little 'outreach'. African pensioners in that area are not represented well enough in aviation, ya know. :)

Let's hope they find him safe and well!

Alan Biles 23rd Nov 2016 12:21

I see from the BBC that he's flying a seriously modified Piper Cub.

"Organisers of the Vintage Air Rally said he had been asked to withdraw from the rally because of a lack of satellite tracking or a working compass on his 1943 Piper Cub biplane".

GWYN 23rd Nov 2016 12:33

I hope he's OK, although knowing Maurice he'll probably be the first to arrive in CT.

A donkey-stop probably isn't quite such a problem for him as losing the prop over QLD - hopefully!

Jan Olieslagers 23rd Nov 2016 12:38

What's QLD? Quarrels over Landing Duties, perhaps?

Parson 23rd Nov 2016 13:42

Have followed Maurice's 'capers' over the years. This sounds a bit more serious though - sincerely hope they find him OK.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of his capers in the past, I'm sure we all share and support your hopes.

I have to admit, I'm rather concerned, particularly that there has been no PLB.

However, Maurice has successfully been through many incidents - so fingers crossed.

Mike Flynn 23rd Nov 2016 16:59

I have to agree I am concerned. This is not a part of the world where a rescue helicopter will turn up.

Fingers crossed he will emerge soon to be scolded again like the naughty boy he is.

It appears the entire rally are detained in Ethiopia.

'Terry Holloway: The word from Nairobi is that the whole rally has been detained in Ethiopia, and that phones and computers confiscated, etc. One of the pilots apparently managed to call his wife in Europe before being cut off. It looks like it's all going pear shaped. Does anyone know any more and what can we do from the UK to assist? Is there any news from or of Maurice?

More here

I received word from the team a short while ago - all fine for now but conditions are poor. Maurice is with them and the team is detained. I have just spoken US embassy South Africa - they are looking into things.

Mike Flynn 23rd Nov 2016 20:27

If the news Terry Holloway has posted is true ,the rest of the rally participants are not going to be happy.

However they wanted adventure and now they have it:D

I think this story would have made a better film than the Tracey Curtis Taylor Aviatrix rubbish.

What will happen next?

Will Kirk be kicked out or will he rejoin and make up?

Someone will have to eat humble pie:ok:

robin 23rd Nov 2016 20:58

I'd guess it would depend on whether or not the Cub is in flyable condition

If not, he'll be on a flight to the UK without the option

Mike Flynn 23rd Nov 2016 21:09

If I was a gambling man I would bet Kirk gets to Cape Town.

Very disappointing I have always thought Ethiopia was a relatively aviation friendly country with a good reputation.Might have to have a rethink in the light of this.Rally appears to have been well organised and to have reacted rapidly to its wayward participant!Good luck to all involved.Stampe

Vintage Air Rally team free to continue.

Latest below from Reuters.

ADDIS ABABA, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Aviators who were detained in Ethiopia while retracing a historic flight route along the length of Africa in 24 vintage planes and support aircraft are now free to continue their journey, the group organiser said on Thursday.
The Vintage Air Rally crew, flying aircraft that include biplanes built in the 1920s and 1930s, were held at the airport in Gambela, western Ethiopia, after they landed following their arrival from neighbouring Sudan.
They have already flown from Europe and through Egypt and plan to end the tour in South Africa. The oldest plane taking part dates to 1928; the oldest pilot is 72.
"Just been resolved now," rally organiser Sam Rutherford told Reuters in a brief text message when asked for an update on their situation. "In hotel, Kenya tomorrow!"
The group of 47 people had been held in a building at the airport and had not been allowed to stay at a hotel they were booked at, the group had said in an earlier Facebook statement.
Wesenyeleh Hunegnaw, director-general of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA), had told a news conference in Addis Ababa that the group lacked proper authorisation for their trip and had made an unauthorised stop in Gambela.
There was no immediate official comment about a resolution.
The aviators' aim is cross 10 countries, making 37 stops in a little more than a month. Kenya was their next planned stop. (Writing by Edmund Blair; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

The story below has appeared in the Times. It appears Terry Holloway, chair of the Air League Awards committee, is not a fan of Maurice Kirk.

An eccentric British pilot has been kicked off a race to fly the length of Africa over allegations that his airmanship was irresponsible and dangerous.

Maurice Kirk, 72, was flying a single-seat aircraft from Crete to Cape Town as part of an 8,000-mile vintage rally with 21 other aircraft. His 1943 Piper Cub was due to land in Gambela, western Ethiopia, on Tuesday but the organisers said that he had gone missing.

Mr Kirk, a former drinking pal of the film actor Oliver Reed, had fallen out with the rally’s director, Sam Rutherford, as they flew south from Khartoum. On a previous trip across the desert Mr Kirk had boasted about flying “below camel level”.

He was asked to leave the rally after he suffered two engine failures — possibly owing to fuel starvation — on the way to Khartoum. It is understood that his satellite equipment and compass also failed. However, instead of heading back north while the rest of the team continued the trip to Cape Town, he tried to follow them. When he failed to appear by nightfall, the organisers raised the alarm.

Terry Holloway, vice-chairman of the Air League, who has been in communication with the group, said: “He turned up yesterday morning, having spent the night in his plane, or under the wing, in the desert. We are delighted he is safe and well but many of us were bewildered that Maurice was allowed to be part of such a trip, given his record.

“He is well known in aviation circles to be a liability. He flies without a licence and cuts corners. He has guts and is probably quite an accomplished pilot but he is a nightmare. As eccentrics go, they don’t get any weirder than Maurice Kirk.”

Asked what kind of state Mr Kirk was in when he arrived, Mr Holloway said: “I don’t know, but knowing Maurice, he’s probably causing as much mayhem as possible.”

Last night the rally organisers announced that all crews were in Gambela “where the Ethiopian authorities have elected to allocate them accommodation at the airport rather than permit them to proceed to their pre-booked hotel”.

It appears that Ethiopian officials impounded ten aircraft flying with the rally, including five biplanes. “Gambela is not an international airport,” a spokesman for the government in Addis Ababa said. “They need permission to fly over.”

Mr Kirk had been a vet in south Wales but was struck off for “disgraceful behaviour” in 2002. He lost his pilot’s licence in 2008 after landing in Texas next to President Bush’s ranch. “I thought I could knock on his door and leave a note to thank him for the US coastguard saving my life,” he said, referring to another of his mishaps.
Oliver Reed?s drinking buddy raises hell on vintage air rally over Africa | News | The Times & The Sunday Times

In May this year the Air League awarded Tracey Curtis Taylor with a framed address in recognition of her flight from Farnborough to Sydney.Terry appeared to have ignored her self claimed non VRF bad weather and low level flying.

Well known aircraft spares supplier Paul Nalson sprung to Kirks defence in a comment below the article . (Which was coincidently written by Lucy Bannerman who ran a puff story on TCT a few weeks ago, in the Times.)

Do not let the facts get in the way of a good story. I can say that I have known Maurice for over 40 years and can vouch that many of the stories about him are perfectly true, but my no means all of them. .

Firstly the photographs that you show of Maurice's wrecked plane is not the one that he is currently flying. Liberty Girl, is the aircraft that he flew in the London to Australia air race and was damaged several times subsequently. He is now in Liberty Girl 11.

The article states he was arrested for landing next to the president's ranch. This makes it sound like he was landing on the White House Lawn. According to Maurice it was a mile or so outside of the ranch. (Which is hardly going to be a suburban type property) My understanding is that he did not lose his licence either.

There was an investigation and that if we are supposed to believe that he spent the last eight years flying without a licence, then the authorities can only have themselves to blame.

It is a legal requirement to have liability insurance on a British or European registered aircraft. Without a licence such insurance would be invalid. Whilst he has a very old aeroplane there is another legal requirement that it should have a certificate of airworthiness or permit to fly. Again if he did not meet these requirements, the rally organisers would only have themselves to blame if they had not checked his credentials.

What is possibly a more interesting story is the fact that the whole rally appears to be detained because they (the organisers) failed to get the proper authorisation to land at Gambela and they are possibly breaking far more laws than Maurice, supposedly is.

Terry Holloway states that he was bewildered that Morris was allowed to part of the trip. Could I suggest that when Maurice was one of the first people to step forward to join the rally that the organisers were quite keen to take his money at the time. His aircraft is old enough to qualify, but again it was felt to be more glamorous to be operating biplane and for that reason, once again, he does not 'fit'.

The comment that 'as eccentrics go, they don't get any weirder the Maurice Kirk' I can say that they certainly do, but they get a different kind of publicity, (or no publicity).

Maurice defies convention. When I learned to fly nearly 50 years ago it was impressed upon us that there were no old bold pilots. At the age of 72. he is nothing if not bold.

Great to see that there are still a few slightly crazy, freedom loving individuals left in this increasingly regimented world. Reading about him really got my day off to a good start! :-)
