Flight to Perranporth
Hi
I was looking to do a flight from Blackbushe to Perranporth during the week. I was planning to speak to the following on the way:
Farborough Radar 125.250
Boscombe Zone 126.700 (MATZ)
Yeovilton Radar 127.350 (AIAA)
Exeter Radar 128.975
Newquay Radar 127.925 MHz
I will probably only be getting a Basic Service along the way. (a MATZ penetration if I fly through Boscombe)
Anybody have any better suggestions than that or is that OK?
I have searched on here, there is a similar thread but it was in 2008 so a bit old so thought I would check if anything has changed since then.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

Newquay Radar has been 133.4 since 2008.
Try planning a route via South of Popham, Middle Wallop and Compton Abbas via Okehampton to avoid the Dartmoor Danger Area, this will also avoid the high ground of Dartmoor. Add Odiham MATZ 131.3 and of course Perranporth Radio 119.750.
I suggest that you get hold of a 2017 edition of Pooley's for details about Perranporth's runways and the correct phone number for PPR. Both 05/23 and 09/27 are available, but you need to take note of the exits available.
Enjoy your flight - it's a stunning destination!

I'll second that - I visited Perranporth whilst on holiday in Cornwall last month. Had a shot in a weightshift microlight whilst down there. The views were really stunning. Won't forget the sight of the cliffs (or the turbulence they caused!) in a hurry.
Its a lovely airfield and a beautiful area.

You will also likely find the further away from the LTMA you get the more likely you are to get actual handovers between ATC units (ie typically a sequence of 'for xyz squawk ####', then 'contact xyz' rather than 'squawk 7000 and freecall') - makes it much simpler...

Newquay Radar is 127.925
One of the great joys about flying in this country is you don't have to talk to anyone. That route is quite do able without needing to talk to anyone other than you departure and arrival airfield.
With a "basic service" you do not expect and may not get any traffic information or conflict resolution information. If you need the reassurance of someone to call for help to put 121.500 and listen out. It you are have 7000 set on a mode S transponder people will know where you are and what your altitude/FL is. If you have ADSB out enabled anyone else flying with FLARM or Pilot Aware will know who you are and where you are.
Keep a look out and enjoy flying in a beautiful part of the world

I second what w says.
Use listening squawks and/or monitor a sensible frequency (eg the ones the OP mentions) but don't clutter up the the airwaves with unnecessary calls unless actually crossing controlled airspace/matz.

Visit to Perranporth
Need to phone them on beforehand as airfield also used for driving instruction and not all runways available. 01872 552266 is also useful for club info.
W-ends can be busy with skydiving from 10,000 ft (NQY control on radio)
Be careful on taxying as tyres can be 'lurking' around aircraft area's.
27 departure 'interesting' if wind above 12 knots due curl over from cliffs.
Fantastic location and still in basic wartime state around the edges. Nice coastal walk to the beach.

A good point, well made! The 1/2 mil chart quotes 133.4 as the Newquay LARS frequency and is the one to use. I'm not sure if they even monitor 127.925 all the time. They'd really appreciate a call as you pass Colliford Lake (or St. Austell if you choose the more southerly scenic option) as they are very busy with RAF, Royal Navy and civil heavy aircraft training in the circuit, plus all the usual commercial arrivals and departures. They'd much rather not have to go down the Class 'D' route but can only keep the freedom of Class 'G' if everyone lets them know what their intentions are.

How much easier it was when I flew into Perranporth from White Waltham almost sixty years ago, no radio to worry about! At the time I was installing R&D equipment in the old Coast Guard building, and used to stroll along the cliff path to the airport to watch the gliders slope soaring above the cliff, the only aviation activity of note at that time. Now I see it is likely to become a residential air park. What a splendid location that will be!
Also watch out for parachute activity at Perranporth, the club used to operate on Fri/Sat/Sun at Perranporth and Mon/Tue at Bodmin. I assume but don't know if that is the same now.

Take your walking boots and walk the coast path to Trevaunance Cove. Might be wise to check the tide before landing as at low tide you can walk from Trevallas Cove along the rocks and save a climb. Sadly if you are flying home the same day the delights of the Driftwood Spars may be restricted to the food and only your passenger(s) will be able to enjoy the micro brewery.

I flew from Fairoaks to devon this week. I talked to Farnbourgh as I was near. They asked me to accept a "not above" for about a min or two. They said thanks, I said my pleasure and good bye. Next person I talked to was my destination.
A basic service is not much use. Why bother? I did listen out on Solent as I was near and put 0011 on the box to let them know.

As a former Horsell resident who kept his homebuilt Turbulent at Fairoaks, I am very interested in the future of this airfield. I hope that it does not become a housing estate.
