Overnight stop in Austria
Has anyone got any suggestions for somewhere to stop overnight in Austria? Somewhere between Linz and Vienna.
We are flying 4 single seat VFR aircraft to Southern Hungary at the end of July and are trying to decide where to stop overnight en route.
Criteria are, nice flat grass or tarmac. 600+ mtrs, Avgas and hangarage for overnight at reasonable rates... and a convenient hotel nearby for 4 pilots.
Linz is a possibility but they do have scheduled flights so bags will have to be scanned etc. Ideally we are looking for a smaller GA airport.
Many thanks

Three GA aerodromes with long tarmac runways (all >900 meters) and Avgas between Linz and Vienna that I am aware of:
- Wels aerodrome (LOLW), which is very close to Linz (LOWL): Weiße Möwe Wels - Willkommen e-mail: [email protected] phone: +43 7242 26499-0
- Vöslau (LOAV): Willkommen am Flugplaz Vslau Kottingbrunn - LOAV e-mail: [email protected] phone: +43 17007 29220
- Wiener Neustadt Ost (LOAN): Loan Airport: Home e-mail: [email protected] or Loan Airport: Kontakt phone: +43 2622 26700 1777
Don't know about hangarage or hotel recommendations, sorry (LOLW and LOAN have an accommodation list on their webpages). Unfortunately there seems to be no English version of the home pages; if you need something to be translated, contact me via PM. The procedures are a bit more complicated than for smaller airfields, and LOLW is close to the Linz CTR, but if you are GPS-equipped (and/or better in navigation than me), it should not be too much of a problem.
Best regards & HTH, Mike

Go to Wiener Neustadt (LOAN)
Cannot recommend Wiener Neustadt (LOAN) highly enough for an overnight in Austria. It's the coolest little airport, and the Diamond people are so friendly. Fuel no hassle, both flavours and two restaurants onsite. Hotel across the road, and there is a great aircraft museum there. There's a few bars and other entertainments within walking distance.

Mike, Irish seaplane,
Many thanks for your help. The airfields you have suggested look perfect. Good facilities but no commercial traffic.
It looks like Wels will be best for us as it will give 3 equal legs.

+1 for Wels / LOLW. The field is almost in town so no ground transport issues and if Wels is too small for you (it's a sleepy little place), then Linz is a 20 min train ride away. PM me for hotel suggestions in Linz if needed.
Security at LOWL (should you decide to go there in the end) is friendly - this is not the hysterical jobsworth country called the UK! The HUGE downside of LOWL (and all other bigger airports in Austria) are the landing fees. Avoid if you can.

LOAN Wiener Neustadt is a nice big GA airport. They have a small cafe onsite at the Diamond building, and a slightly more (casual) restauarant cafe on the north side of the airfield.
There is a hotel right beside the airport Hotel Steinfeld
The hotel is modern, clean but simple. (Walls are pretty thin). It's a hotel Garni which means that the only food they do is breakfast, so you'll probably need to go into the city for dinner. City centre square is about 3km away so won't cost a fortune in a taxi (and there is a regular bus service close by).

or an I missing something?
Admittedly it's been a while, so they may have seen the light on the 'approach fee', but make sure you know ALL the fees involved!
