Women In The Air Day - 28th August
To celebrate 100 years of the first PPL issued to a female pilot on 29th August, 1911, Fife Flying Club is holding a 'Women In The Air' day, at Fife Airport, Glenrothes. It is one of a number of events being held around the country, initiated by the British Women Pilots Association.
All are welcome on Sunday and landing fees will be waived for all visiting aircraft with a female on board. On the day there will be a number of activities including a number of special guests, a barbeque, helicopter rides and hover challenge. I've copied an email sent out from White Waltham to it's members. If there are any ladies out there looking to fly somewhere on the Bank holiday I thought that it might appeal -- note the free anding fee for visiting lady pilots!
100 YEARS OF BRITISH WOMEN IN AVIATION
Calling all Ladies
The first British woman, Hilda Hewlett, received her Pilot’s Licence, certificate number 122, on the 29th August 1911. To mark this historic moment and celebrate White Waltham’s proud tradition of women flyers, we are organising a Ladies Flying Day at White Waltham on Monday 29th August 2011.
We’ve organised a few things to help the day go with a swing:
· Ladies – if your licence has lapsed and you would like to fly, we’ve organised a 20 minute trial lesson rate of £50.00 inclusive
· There will be free landings for all ladies flying into White Waltham from other clubs, so if you know someone who qualifies please let them know
· Cream teas (to include finger sandwich, scone, jam and clotted cream and the all important mug of tea, all for £4.50) will be served in the club house/on the lawn from 15.00
There will also be flying displays:
13.00 – Glider display
– Yak 52 aerobatic display
14.00 Flypast by our lady pilots

Would have liked to have come, think its wrong that the landing fee is waved only if a female is onboard, so I wont be coming.
Imagine if it was the other way round, why not celebrate the 100 year of the first male issued PPL.

The ladies on Monday are doing good, they are promoting aviation in a positive light.
We we have seen the reaction to the "whats in it for me brigade" fairly quickly (or should I call it the riot scum posse).
I tell you what finger flyer if you come I will pay double your landing fee and donate it to the Rick Gifford Flying high scholarship fund. This is a fund set up to teach a disadvantaged young person to fly.
Rick Gifford was our DCFI who was taken by cancer this month..
If anyone would like to donate to the fund please let me know.

I must admit, I was quite shocked by FingerFlyer's response - it is an historic date that the clubs are celebrating. Indeed, Fife Flying Club do mark various occasions - they held a grand Fly-in and Open Day to celebrate their own 25th anniversary.
Anyway some male club members have really taken the theme on board, and are threatening to arrive in drag.
The Edinburgh festival is on, has anyone invited the Ladyboys of Bangkok...?
Anyway, just to point out, Fife's event is planned for Sunday, so anyone wishing to do both can...

FingerFlyer may have a point. A century ago a woman getting a pilot licence was an extraordinary event and it still deserves to be celebrated today, but have we not moved on since?
Don't women nowadays have the same opportunities as men, in aviation or any other field? Does it really make sense in the 21st century to have gender-specific pilot associations? Wouldn't a symbolic gift have been more appropriate for those women turning up at the fly-in (say a flower and a card) - with discounted landing fees for everybody? Am I
being too logical?

Women in the air Flyin' day -Yaaahoo! Sounds like it will be a blast! Cannot make this year.....maybe next year.....have a fantastic day, the hover challange sounds fun!
