IWM Duxford Bonus Days 2011

IWM Duxford Bonus Days programme for 2011: discounts for a great flying day out.

Imperial War Museum Duxford must be the premier destination for GA pilots in Europe!

The museum offers a full and fun-packed day out with over 200 historic aircraft on display in iconic buildings such as AirSpace and the American Air Museum. It is the perfect destination for all fans of aviation and a real ‘must-see’.

If you keep your eye on the Duxford sky during the flying season, you are likely to see any number of iconic aircraft in flight, including the Spitfire, Hurricane, B-17 Flying Fortress, Catalina and other rare types of aircraft based at IWM Duxford.

Bonus Days offer great discounted prices: Single- or twin-engined aircraft can land for £7; museum entry is £7 for adults and children aged 15 or under go free. For most Bonus Days, all light aircraft will qualify.

Here are the plans for this year – make a note in your diary now - (all days are Saturdays):

16 April Safety Bonus Day - arrive in any light aircraft
-free Safety Day admission
-also may arrive by car

14 May 'Flyer Magazine’ Bonus Day -see ‘Flyer Magazine’ for details

11 June New PPL Fly-In & Experience Building Bonus Day -new PPLs Experience Fly-In
-arrive in any aircraft with more
-experienced pilot in the right seat to help
-See: Flyer Forum – Fly-ins and Social

16 July RV Bonus Day -arrive in any RV aircraft

10 Sept AOPA Bonus Day -AOPA members and potential members
-two- way dialogue with AOPA team
-talks from guest presenters

IWM Duxford Safety Bonus Day:
Following the success of the last three years, we are again holding the IWM Duxford Safety Bonus Day, which kicks-off the GA flying season on 16th April. As an incentive to attend, the Safety Bonus Day programme will be free and pilots may arrive by car to attend the day only. Details are on the website IWM Duxford - Europe's premier aviation museum. I will start a separate thread for the Safety Bonus Day shortly.

New PPL Bonus Day:
The Flyer Forums organised a great fly-out for new PPLs and students to Wellesbourne in 2009. IWM Duxford hosted the 2010 event, but this was weathered off, so we will try again in 2011 -- a discount PPL Fly-out and Experience-Building Bonus Day on Saturday 11 June. Go to the Fly-in and Social Event Forum for details. The idea is that new PPLs join up with an experienced pilot for the trip to Duxford, for a good day out and to build some valuable experience. Students are also welcome to come along.

Fly-Ins

As well as Bonus Days, Duxford welcomes FLY-INs. Any group of pilots planning to visit Duxford can arrange to take advantage of group prices: 5 or more aircraft qualify for a discounted landing fee of £10; 10 or more people qualify for 20% discount on admission to Imperial War Museum Duxford. This applies to standard daily admission only and does not apply to special event days or air shows. The usual PPR is requested, a few days in advance.

Further information about the IWM Duxford Bonus Days 2011 and information for fly-in visitors can be found on the website: IWM Duxford - Europe's premier aviation museum

The airfield team will be delighted to hear from forumites (call for PPR and briefing 01223 833376) and to see you on the day.

Just for people who don’t know, I should declare my interest. I’m a casual FISO at Duxford. I’m also a pilot who thinks the place is pretty marvellous.

Alan.

Hi Alan, for various reasons I haven't been able to do much flying over the past year but I shall do my best to make it to Duxford this year.
You've all had a nice long break from worrying about me so I shall do my best to return things to Ops Normal - oh, yes, I'll bring the supplementary bribe ..... er...... landing fee

Wombat -- it's always a pleasure to worry about you, we've missed you. Come and see us, you'll be very welcome.

(Just let me know when. Should I put Essex, D&D and Farnborough on standby???, maybe post a notam??? )

(For everybody else's benefit, there's a story here from a few years ago. DX Wombat was very worried at the time, but did exactly the right thing and everything turned out just fine. DX remembers the day well and has learned from it, which is just as it should be).

I would do all of that if I were you and you may need to add in East Midlands (don't bother with Birmingham, they don't like to talk to mere mortals even exaulted ones like the CFI), and a couple of others on the way down as I may well be flying down from not too far from home for a change. Don't tell D&D - they don't need to have the burden of waiting for me to call them. I would have liked to have made it to your Safety Day but it's the same day as Project Propeller.
What Alan says is true - I did have a problem (or several) but I received a great deal of help and support from everyone who became involved in the event.

The weather forecast is looking good for Saturday, so if you're thinking of coming to the Safety Bonus Day, call tomorrow for your lunchtime/afternoon slot. The afternoon presentations start at 2pm and the tabletop sessions run intil 4.30 (local time), so an arrival around 13.00 to 13.30 will work well and we do slots then. 01223 833376.

It will a busy day, so do remember your briefing and please be patient.

Duxford beckons......

Phoned last week & was told no slots till 12.00hrs onwards, My fault for not phoning sooner so won't now be coming as that's too late for me had wanted a 10.30am slot..

Might go to Old Buck or Peterbough instead. Have fun all those who got their booking slot.

Trev - it may be worth phoning on Saturday morning. The weather forecast is good, but we do get the odd cancellation for personal or tech reasons. It may be hard to get through, though. Try about 9, if you're flying anyway.

Thanks Alan,

will try then as i was treating Missus to a day out at Dux & was disappointed when i told her i was too late & all morning slots had gone, Was coming down from Sandtoft in a C152 which i have booked for all day till 16.00hrs. If i came at 12.00hrs we would only have been able to be at Dux for 2 hours which wasn't worth coming down for. My own fault.

If i still don't manage to get through or get someone's cancellation will still take her somewhere else, just have Old Buck or Peterborough in mind as reserve destinations.

Cheers Trev

Arrival briefing

Hi, I'm conscious of the need to get an arrival briefing before setting off tomorrow morning from Biggin. Will be routing into Duxford from the East (Haverhill). If the wind's a light South Westerly and R24's in use (LHC) would you advise me to join downwind from the South? I'll try to phone anyway. Thanks!

Trev:
Just call us. if we can help you fit in with your plans , we will do so. Call tomorrow 01223 833376.

Neil:
If we are using 24, suggest you route outside the ATZ towards the west, via Royston, so you can fit in with the down wind joins. Keep a good lookout and enjoy your flight.

See you all tomorrow.
Alan and Helen.

It's a lovely day at Duxford. Light winds and CAVOK.

You can still fly in for 16/4 Safety Bonus Day if you call to book a lunchtime landing slot 01223 833376.

Thank you!

Well done to the ATC and organisers for today's event. Good slot management and traffic handling especially with the pleasure flights mixing in. Hope everyone enjoyed their visit as we did! Thanks.

Wish i could have got there, set off from Sandtoft CAVOK cruised at 4500feet then saw a wall of cloud beneath me in the distance, Not being IMC rated yet, descended to try to remain VFR North of Peterborough & was pushed down to 1300feet, with limited VIZ, wasn't happy & could hear conditions were better at Duxford & elected to abort & turn back rather than get myself into trouble.
Backtracked 10 miles at 1500feet VFR cloud cleared & flew back to Sandtoft at 4500 feet!!!

Telephoned Dux to let them know i had turned back before they alerted international rescue
Next time will try again. Glad all went well & you all enjoyed your day.

Cheers Trev

I'm glad to say that we had an excellent and safe day!

The feedback was very strong and very positive, so I'm glad we have been able to run an event which is both popular and very useful - a great start to the flying season.

Thanks to the presenters and experts who gave up their Saturday. Thanks also to the patient pilots who at times waited some time to get their initail call in. It was another busy day, at times very busy, and the standard of airmanship was almost always very good indeed.

I don't think anybody had to go around twice (apart from the Rapide pilot, who was on a special exercise).

It's a shame that some folk had to cancel or turn back. However, it did allow us to fit in some last minute bookings, so your call to say no-can-do was appreciated.

The next Duxford Bonus Day is on May 14th and is the 'Flyer Magazine' Bonus Day - discounted landings and admission to the museum and something special from the Flyer folk. We will post more about this soon.

Alan.

Visited from Liverpool and had an excellent day. ATC coped admirably. If we one quibble it would be over the fact that in addition to the discounted landing fee, admission to the museum was supposed to be free. It wasn't. Don't know if this was due to a lack of communication with the museum itself but they published the same information that you circulated so you would expect their staff to know.
