SEP rating renewal

Hi people,

I'll have to renew my SEP rating and I've been looking forward about all my options. Well, as you know... JAR-FCL says that I should have flown 12h in the last 12 months or to do a "skill flight" with a FI-Examiner.

But... What would happen if I let my SEP rating to expire and the next year I'd want to get it back? What should I do?

Somebody told me that the procedure would be the same than if I'd not reach the 12 hours before expiring date: A skill flight with a FI-examiner. Is it right?

Greetings.

If you let your rating expire hours are irrelevant. You require a flight test with an examiner in order to renew it.

Provided that you don't leave it too long before renewing (5 Years ?)

You can leave it 20 years the requirement is the same. Only difference is that after 5 years it goes to Gatwick for re-issue

I've done both, left it 17 years and then renewed, and then later had to leave it 6 months beyond the end of my 2 year stint and renewed.

The test was the same for both and no big sweat, if you can't do everything that is asked for in a safe manner you probably shouldn't be up there.....

Section F1 of LASORS has the details.

If you fly with an examiner before the rating expires, its a licence proficiency check; after the rating expires, its a full skills test.

I've only done the LPC, and its no big deal - some handling, a few stall recoveries, engine failures & then back to the airfield for a few circuits.

I had an idea, possibly imaginary, that if it was left for more than 5 years then it was necessary for either the CAA or an examiner to peruse your logbook and come up with some sort of abbreviated training syllabus?

Imaginary!

After 17 years off I could have just slung myself in a PA28 with an examiner if I felt confident/stoopid enough, with no training whatsoever

As it was, I did 16 hours refresher, getting myself up to full skills test standard (not just SEP renewal) I also revised all of the subjects up to exam pass standard, especially Air Law as that was the main one to have changed in the interim
