Unhappy The end of 100LL......

With only .2 percent of the fuel market, 100LL is coming under increasing pressure from the environmentalists. Pretty soon, the price will start winding up and where will that leave us private flyers using non-permit aircraft? Does anyone know if there are plans for GA aircraft to be cleared for modification so that they can then use 82UL (mogas)?

There is an interesting article in last month's Popular Flying (PFA) mag, it pertains to Permit a/c but may be the way to go for Cert a/c.

If you aren't a member you should be!

Rightstuffer, I think it leaves you looking for a Permit aircraft!! There are some nice ones out there, they're not all Probably F**king Awful!
The FAA has a much more enlightened attitude regarding small engines and unleaded fuel. Most of the damn things were designed to run on 80 octane anyway and suffered big problems when 100LL was introduced.

The exasperating thing is that there is no
environmental advantage whatsoever in using
unleaded fuel instead of leaded. Rather the
opposite in fact.

Question

Didn't some eminent authority theorise that the increase in unleaded fuel use was the reason for the drop in sparrow population?

lowNslow - I'd be more than happy with a Permit Aircraft, but they are restricted to VMC and can't fly in some of the new cats of airspace.

However, I do rather fancy commuting in a FW-190 replica....just imagine what fun you could have with the radio calls.....

Ach - Cottesmore zone zis is Sturmvogel Funf Seben - I WILL be penetrating your MATZ....

So what's the answer, according to the CAA, JAA, FAA, *AA?

Do we ground most of the GA fleet?

Do we convert to Mogas?

Do we wait for a 100LL unleaded equivalent?

Do we refit 1946 C120's with these nice diesels that are being developed?

What happens next?

What are the issues?

Rightstuffer, that does sound like a hoot.

Did you hear about the American guy who had his Beech Baron painted allover red before Oshkosh? He did it so that he could hear the tower say "Cessna ?????, line up after the red baron!"

I would love one of those WAR replicas or even better of of those lovely SE5a replicas that are around. I saw the three of them taking off from Popham one morning in formation (they only had one radio between them). It was like a scene from Dawn Patrol.

PS Just to nitpick, the Sturmvogel was the Me262. Spot the anorak in the thread

Thumbs up

We seem to have got off the thread a bit, lowNslow but since we're on the subject....
I was on finals into Sibson last week and two SE5s were sat there waiting for me to land to that they could go. I felt as though I'd gone through a time-warp - they were wonderful to see. In fact I was so preoccupied that I was distracted from my usual 'greaser' ...........(again!).

BTW I thought the Sturmvogel was the Me110 - hence proving that I am not an anorak...

Continuing with the sidestep, the Me110 was the Zerstorer (dubious spelling) although what it actually destroyed was it's own reputation. Anorak status fully confirmed.

Neatly stepping back onto the original path, the PFA mag (can't remember which issue)had an interesting article about the demise of 100LL. It does have the look of inevitability about it. I'm sure the CAA will act with their usual fast-as-a-speeding-snail attitude in sorting out the resultant mess.

Cool

Ha! lowNslow. You haff fallen into my cunningly baited trap. I knew all along it wasn't a Sturmvogel, but a true Anorak (knights cross with oak-leaves)would have spotted my deliberate reference to the Me 110 which should have been Bf 110!
So - ze cooler for you mein freund.. and five more circuits before sunset...!

You guys are definitely competing for the order of the 'aluminium mini-step ladder with oak leaves and swords'!!
Bf 110 - Zertoerer
Me 262 - Sturmvogel (bomber) or Schwalbe (fighter)
Fw190/Ta 152 - ?? 'Butcher Bird' was one nickname, I gather! In German this is 'Metzger Vogel' or 'Wuerger'. (Sorry - no Umlauts on my keyboard!)

Wink

You are all a sad bunch of broken units who should get out more. On the other hand, maybe you should be locked in more
