PPL Book Video (In Progress)

Hello Ppruner's!

I did my PPL at Orlando Flight Training back in 2006 and having my main job since then as a Director and Documentary film maker; I wanted to create a complete set of presenting on the PPL Books with a nice female presenter who has a lot of personality.

What would be your thoughts on this? Would it be more interesting than having to sit and read the books?
I know when I did my PPL, I found it very hard to just read these, and couldn't always afford ground school, especially when I was choosing the USA Flight schools, and only having 3 weeks there.

Let me know what you think

Presenter? I'd rather have a professional looking pilot who looks as if they know what they are talking about.

Cheers

a complete set of presenting on the PPL Books
Anything is possible... but this would be a much much more involved undertaking than you might imagine in terms of both time and money.

Additionally there are a number of syllabus areas where you would require all your directing skill to express the topic using this medium.

In my opinion you would be unlikely to recover your costs through sales let alone make a profit.

You should also bear in mind that "stuff changes" and out of date information can render such a product obsolete unless you're prepared to continue development.

On a personal note I think you'll struggle to find a convincing presenter who doesn`t have a solid background in flying training... perhaps you'd do better to consider a team of presenters to break things up a bit?? (But you'd need to keep them apart from each other if you wanted to get any form of agreement on the script)

Substitute the word "complete" for "selected" or "general interest" and maybe it would be another story.

You asked for our thoughts - these are mine, but I wish you luck nevertheless.

Thanks for your great reply

Wind Driver you are right! I did get thoughts of General DVD such as:

Catalog of Crosswind Landings
ATC Chatter and Video at Manchester (If I got permision to visit up on top)
But I'm guessing that will equate to getting permision to use that material.

I think Radio Telephony might be the answer and general flying techniques.

Perhaps Audio Book of the 5 books (I think I'd need permission again for this)

I'm a professional (classroom) instructor, although not in aviation. I've also been force-fed internal business updates via various "modern" education methods, such as CBTs, web lectures, video presentations and whatnot. And we're experimenting with Instructor-Led Online, blended learning, mixed "live" and "online" classrooms and various other delivery methods.

Call me old-fashioned, but I found that the only way I can effectively and efficiently learn something is if the information comes to me at a speed with which I can process the information, without falling asleep. And right now there's only two methods that effectively do that for me:

- Reading a book myself, so that I can set my own pace.
- A classroom course with a live instructor, who can see if I'm frowning, not catching up, or falling asleep, and do something about it.

The whole PPL course would easily be 40 hours of video, if not significantly more. I'd die of boredom before I would even be halfway through. A good-looking video presenter might help me stay awake a little longer, but probably distract me instead of helping the education process.

I had a similar idea (but certainly could not be arsed doing it for all seven books! Just PoF for now). Then I ran into the inevitable problem of making it all less tedious. So like anybody trying to make something less tedious, I sprinkled in a melange of baby and cat pictures. People seem to dig that.

Great idea

Definitely worth a try IMHO. Taking aside the inevitable comments about the female presenter, I think the key thing about the presenter is that they are really professional and engaging. Perhaps use more than one for a bit of variety (no comments please!). I've bought a few DVDs and tried CBT for the PPL. I found it was dire. Amateur presenters and boring monologues. I went back to the books in despair. However, when things are more engaging, it definitely works well. Others may disagree, but I enjoy Mr King's DVDs even if he does break the world record for the 'most frequent use of the word "Fun"'.

I think the proof of the pudding would be to do a test video explaining the whizzwheel. If you can make that interesting and engaging, then the rest should be a cynch!

Thanks alot, I will try something in the general area, and even if it's just youtube subscribers interacting with me, it may help in advert sponsorship to keep me going

hey Manchester,

At the moment, im workig through my ppl theory and you must know how it is how you cant sit there for more than an hour and a halfwithout wanting to sleep. i find that videos are interesting, but could not allow to learn as much, because of the higher amount or detail (like seeing a plane land behind the presenter will make you want to focus on the "cooler" stuff for that moment. You'll miss out on the important stuff). i find that the video will definetly help with the met and nav stuff, but the law, nah. loading systems and p charts will be easier on video too.....overall i like the idea, and id buy a copy anyday

but im from brisbane, Australia

also, dont do the old school presenter stuff where its a saucy video. it turns you off big time.

more than one presenter, happy chaps who look professinal but serious about what they are teaching, and dont forget the in flight fun eg, ADF music

My flying instructor in florida put some music on too

I will have to try Audio books first to see if that works, as it's always better to just lie back and listen, and then general videos.

Maybe just Documentary Style following students and the instructors daily schedule

And also Informative parts about getting a Visa and finding the right school, as I remember when I went to a 3 week training school in Florida, which taught me alot about Car Salesmen Techniques in Lamb Leather/suede jackets

Does Martha King not count as hot totty ?

King Schools already do training videos - albeit taylored to the US market, but the principle is the same. Actually, hot totty aside, their vids are pretty interesting.

I'd be interested to see some "Naked Aerobatics" by buxom young chicks with big hooters. Maybe Svetlana Kapanina would oblige, not only is she hot, she is a great pilot (the things she does with that stick make my eyes water!) and also very clever....Would be a good way to demonstrate the G forces at work....

(Sorry ladies for my blatant sexism...of course you could have the male version)

wow, you defenitly need a girlfriend, and please no female pilot, cause you have more important things to do up there

i like the idea of audio books, because in year 12 last year, it helped me read a boring book quickly. BUT, audio books seem to cover a lot of imformation too quickly...mind you, your audio books are for actual teaching, so it wll be a little complicated with the visual side of things, and i think there is a lot to it.

i am only 17, but share a passion for aviation, and desire to be up there at a young age flying nice machines. i live in australia, and would love to see the aviation world outside of australia too....it would be amazing
