NOTAM usage survey - please fill in

With the recent changes to the AIS website in the UK the subject of NOTAMs is being discussed again. However, even those of us involved in the topic don't have much hard data as to how many people check NOTAMs, how many don't, how many have stopped since the AIS website changes, etc.

In an effort to gather such information, we've created a survey. It will only take 5 minutes to fill in and its completely anonymous. The website doesn't even record your IP address against your submission, let alone ask for your name.

Please complete it now http://notams.dsc.net

Also, ask your fellow pilots to fill it in too, particularly those that don't read the various flying forums. The more data we can gather the more useful it will be and the more likely it is we can bring about any changes that you feel might be necessary. The results of the survey will be available to all, both in raw data form and with any analysis that is undertaken.

Obtaining Notams from AIS is a long winded process. I always use and teach the use of the French site.

Why can't we have a system that shows a UK map with flagged up position of notams within the fir so that i can find in an instant where some obscure point or village is having a fete fly past.

OK just checked the new AIS site, seems a lot easier to input data.

Big End Bob

Thats why the lat and long of the event is contained within the notam itself, it doesn't take a genius to work it out from there.

I'm not sure why there are so many gripes about the UK AIS site, if I can manage it, anyone can.

What is worrying, is the number of pilots, particularly instructors, who don't bother checking notams, then wonder why they encounter something they weren't expecting.

niknak - agree with you that all the information is there and it isn't hard to understand the lat and long, but it would be much simpler if the AIS website plotted the lat & long on a chart automatically.
I'm not saying everything should be easy because I can't be bothered - but if the facility is there (which it is, on several other sites - unfortunately they have to make a disclaimer that it's not for operational usage then why not add that to the AIS?

Here is my pre flight briefing.

I check the TAFS and METARS, file a FP if needed, fax a GenDec and tell the boys in blue as required and then call for PPR and possibly send a fax to tell customs I am coming.

I fly for business and pleasure. Unfortunately I don’t have a flight briefing office at my disposal to take care of this for me.

I have flown aircraft with fuelling systems that are sufficiently complicated that I know I need to read the POH once and then once again, and then see why many pilots have still got themselves into trouble.

I therefore like aircraft where the designer has thought about the Hfs and provided me with systems that are simple because I am a simple person.

Moreover sometimes I need to get from A to B at short notice - I don’t want to enjoy the pleasures of a NOTAM briefing that refers me to an AIC or necessitates my finding my map and ruler to plot twenty different points.

Shock horror, sometimes I set off with no particular plan in mind and decide it might be quite pleasant to head off in a different direction from that originally intended for a bit of cross country.

With all that in mind I can self brief using a graphical interface very efficiently and effectively whilst still being aware of the imperfections with the system. Strangely, I can even do it in the air with some aplomb.

To me the clever part is not being satisfied with blaming the pilot for being lazy but in designing a system that recognises the pilot is not only likely to be lazy but also a bit simple so lets make life as easy as possible for the pilot and give him the least possible excuse for screwing up my clever design.

As I said I am just a simple person and that is why I am a greater supporter of these kind people who have written graphical interfaces for us. I think for every one of us that uses them we should support them and encourage NATS to help and for every one that does not use them or check the NOTAMS at all because they think it is to complicated to give one of the graphical products a go.

For every one else (those that use and have always used the NATS site) and nothing else or have a briefing officer I am very happy for you. You are excused.

I have tried the new website and the various options available and none of them are as user friendly as the graphical program that I used to use. I should add that I had a Nav. Licence in addition to a Pilots Licence so I am used to plotting positions on charts etc and am well aware of the error that can occour when plotting co-ordinates.
Because a decision has been made even after suitable promulgation and possibly consultation to change the AIS web site(I am not sure this went through an external consultation process) does not make it right, it has to be fit for purpose as determined by the community that uses it.
The system should serve you NOT you the system.
Any change to any safety critical system must at least be safety neutral. This change fails that test.
