OK - thanks but helicopters excluded I am afraid.
STOL - well if not amazing, pretty good,
Fuel injected - really important cant be bothered with all that carb heat business,
Could I add able to land on rough(ish) ground,
OK - not to bothered about cost, but interested in what might fit the bill.

Any of these. I personaly want the 7-420AC, i think it is the mutz nutz. Although the 260c is probably more financialy viable.

2. What do you want to use it for, or how much must it be able to carry?
3. Are you only interested in Lycoming/Continental engined A/C or would you consider Rotax etc?
4. Must it be Class A, or would you consider a VLA or microlight?

I was just thinking the same thing. And even further, if you go the PFA route (half the cost remember, but it does require you to build the thing yourself) you could for instance get a Europa. The default engine for the Europa and a lot of other kitbuild aircraft is the Rotax 912/914 which has carbs, but there are some rumours about a fuel-injection system, either as factory default or an aftermarket option. Anyway, the Rotax 912, depending on the setup, does not necessarily need a traditional carb heat system. You either use warm, under-cowling air for the intake, or you can use an aftermarket kit made by Skydrive (I think) which uses the coolant to heat the carb bodies themselves. This doesn't technically prevent carb ice, but prevents the carb ice from sticking.
But I've also seen a picture of a prototype diesel engine which is deliberately designed to have a form factor equal to the Rotax 912. Even the air intakes and various cable connections are in the same place. Don't remember the name but it sounded like vulcan-something.

backpacker has a good point.
The europa takes off in about 200-300m and flies c110-120 knots on average.Nice handling too in the air. Mono-wheel a bit tricky on ground, but I have only had 5-10 hours practice
You can put it on a trailer and it takes normal unleaded petrol, which is cheaper than 100ll.
The rotax 912 100hp turbo is very good for performance.
There are some available ready built for private sale.
Or for something a little more beefy, how about a Cessna 182.

1. Open mind on price,
2. Load carrying is not vital, but able to get in and out of short strips, and maybe some off airfield landings so OK on rough gorund,
3. Not too bothered on the engine, other than fuel injected,
4. Class A
5. An added advantage would be IFR approved, but not absolutely vital.

Confused about the injection bit. If all you want is not to have to bother – ever – with carb heat, then it is possible to do this on the Rotax without injection. This opens up a huge number of aircraft. A Kitfox (group A version if still possible) would have amazing STOL, so would a VLA version of a C42 etc etc etc.

Thanks - some really good ideas so far, and a few are very interesting.
As to Rotax, I know I am biased, but I would be happier without a Rotax, and also not a kit built.
Maule looks very interesting, very impressed with the Helio and see it may be coming back into production (it looks a hell of a lot of fun), not convinced the Dornier is all that STOL.
Look forward to some more suggestions.

If you're not worried about IFR:

They all have pretty reasonable STOL, low fuel costs (don't know why you have a downer on the Rotax) and, for new aircraft, relatively cheap.
Oh, and you can't go far wrong with a 180HP, (injected ), C172 SP. As long as you don't pack the kitchen sink, it will do a pretty reasonable impression of a STOL aircraft.
