Flying Schools in and around LAS
Anybody know of anywhere i can hire a light aircraft with instructor in the Vegas area. Just looking to have an hours flight around the area in a fixed wing aircraft. I know there are plenty of helicopter companies around which i will use but would also like a fly myself.

Try searches on North Las Vegas (VGT) or Henderson (HND). You really should go up for more than an hour, the grand canyon is a bit further than that and shouldn't be missed.
I flew with West Air Aviation at VGT a few years back when on a long haul slip pattern. Did 3 hrs in the R22 but they also do fixed wing. Mostly fixed wing actually. A google search for "north las vegas flight school" will find it.
VGT is also where the Grand Canyon Twin Otters with the big windows fly from. A bunch of our cabin crew went on one and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. It's about a 20/30 minute drive or so from the hotels I think.
The Grand Canyon isn't the only impressive thing to see, try Lake Mead and the dam (Hoover Dam?), Red Rock Canyon etc.

I've flown out of North Las Vegas a few times, initially doing much the same as you plan to.
North Las Vegas airport is easily accessible from the strip. You can even get a bus via Downtown if you are without a car when there.

You will notice form the air that there is a huge air force base which doesn't feature on the chart!!!
Its a bit like flying over Mars at first!! Great terrain but without many options for putting her down.
Take a trip up the Colorado river towards the Grand Canyon.
I'll second Floppy Link's recommendation for the Hoover Dam.
When you call up ground ask for "a code for the Dam" and ATC will get you through Mccarran Intl airports airspace and let you low over the dam. You'll still be at about 5000' amsl.
Another classic is a night run of the strip.
I would have a good chat with an instructor and he'll know the ropes - there is a lot to be distracted by!
If you want a used VFR chart to plan with, I have some somewhere.

Obviously I agree with Genghis about Prescott and Skyschool. Actually I fly with Northaire who have an extensive fleet also at Prescott and have looked after me very well over the years.
Not sure about the 'huge air force base'. Presumably not Nellis which is very much on the Chart. Perhaps you mean Groom Lake but you'd struggle to notice that without entering the restricted airspace.
