A share in Kent
Always fancied getting in at ground level and making my wodge in the Real Estate business. That's where the real money is. Now seems to be a great time to get on the same bandwagon as the property merchants and invest in something inflation-proofed + plus + plus.
I saw something about a Kent airfield (Rochester?) being up for grabs the other day, but I'll be d*mned if I know where I was it. Anyone got the link?

I run the caff at Rochester, and I've sent off for info - not 'cos I want to make a killing, but because it might give us a chance to shake up the board and management who seem pretty b***dy apathetic after the 5 year extension was granted.
Despite producing the best airfield caff food in the South of England (if not the world), we make monthly losses through the winter 'cos wusses stop flying and the public simply don't know we're there. We need to move over to the Eastern side of the airfield, as do all the other airfield businesses, but nothing's happening....

ps. It's not me selling the shares. I think there are only 20 or so existing shareholders, so it's probably possible to work out who it is.
pps. On Saturday we have Lamb's liver hot pot, and Chicken Casserole. Sunday is roast turkey.
ppps. Correction: Samedi nous avons foie d'agneau et coq au vin, Dimance c'est Roti D'Inde (the missus, the cook, is French....)
pppps. The lack of the public does at least ensure that if you do find us, you know you're amongst aviators - 'twas Basil Fawlty who put up posters specifying 'no riff raff'.......
Rochester Airport has recently won a new lease to develop and operate Rochester airport. This secures the future of aviation at Rochester.
An opportunity has arisen for interested parties to purchase shares in the operating company. These shares are in small lots of £500 to allow small investors to have a part in the future of this historic community airfield.

I am one of the 'wusses' grounded by a light drizzle. I promise to fly over and sample your fine grub when the sun comes out.
Teech
To misquote the bearded / sweatered one " to make a million in aviation it is best to start with two million".
The big question is - does the airport 'operating company' offering shares actually own the land? Probably not.
I suspect the land will be worth a fortune in five years once planning permission for the inevitable Retail Park / housing estate is provided. Shame.

I think this is one of the signs that the tide has turned. (I've got to think it, my business is here, my wife works here and my aircraft is hangared here).

Guess the shares are in Rochester Airport PLC which holds the current lease council retains ownership of the incredibly valuable land.I think we,ll keep the airfield for many more years but the current infrastructure roads, buildings and hangars are very tired major investment is required and with a five year lease.??
The airport cafe is truly a high spot of light aviation cuisine in the South East.Run by Steves delightful authentically French wife Natalie reasonably priced and excellent food to suit all tastes is a real treat. The "specials" are worthy of mention as is the Wednesday evening "dining in" night when the "in"(but very welcoming!!) crowd indulge in a frenzy of gastronomic delight with one of Natalies home produced 3 course meals plus free aperitif and coffee all for about £12 per head, bring your own booze.Book the wednesday night in advance as Natalie can only cope with 38 guests.A superb value aviation evening, highlight of the mid week when all are made welcome!!. Lets make sure this enterprise succedes it certainly deserves to!!.As for the shares well I,m feeding the airort about £300 amonth in hangarage etc. I think thats enough!!

Sat chatting to Steve last year at a grass strip in the wilds of Norfolk and he freely drooled about his French missus. I have yet to back any claims up but I intend to. See you when the weather gets better!

The other link to this "purchase" is www.rochester.flyer.co.uk.
The lease that has been negotiated is for a maximum of 5 yrs to allow a proper business plan to be put together for submission to the Local Council. This will form the basis for negotiating a longer term lease.
My view is the Airport has a future - certainly longer than 5 years - but then I would say that because I am based there and have a vested interest.
I share SteveR's view about a shake up being required and with any luck an influx of new blood (new shareholders) will be the catalyst
As for the land being worth a fortune... that is exactly what the council thought 5 years ago - but they have been firmly put in their place by the Goverment Planning Inspectors ruling thatt there shall be NO housing developemnt allowed on this site
So there is everything to look forward to - who knows perhaps a shareholders discount landing scheme or free hangarage.....

Memories of shouting "JUST STOP FLYING YOU BU**ER!!" as I fought to control the bounces during the 'landing roll' in my new (to me) aircraft.
Mind you, dunno if I was 'drooling' about the wife, possibly more about the fun of hanging round an airfield all day (almost) legitimately

Top scoff @ Rochester
Stampe - you are letting the secrets out!
I know what'll happen - Natalies dining in nights will become so succesful that the 'inner sanctum' won't get a look in.
During the day too - no longer do you need to spend an extra hour in your horrible noisy cockpit, risking life and limb over La Manche when you can stop short and enjoy authentic French cuisine at good old Rochester.
She also does a bacon buttie that will put even the lardiest and smokiest Greasy Spoon to shame.
I am firmly convinced that good catering is wot brings visitors flying in. Do it for long enough and the word will spread far and wide.
Hurrah for Natalie - she is the greatest and (best Terry Thomas voice here) - 'Soooooo French'.
Vivre La Gastronomie!!
