Flights from Edinburgh to USA??
I know this is a dumb ass question but does anyone know when Edinburgh is gonna get a direct transatlantic service? I travel at least four times a year to USA, and the thought of having to go down to LHR pisses me off. I know BMI were thinking about it, but other than that, thats it. BAA are wanting to spend Millions on new runways and terminals, when all they should do is allow their other airports to handle Transatlantic traffic, and take the strane abit BMI said that between EDI and GLA, EDI was more suited to the traveller they wanted, as GLA was more the package budget minded, and EDI was more Schdueled minded. Just hope it happens, as Continental service out of GLA to NWR isn't that good, certainly not on a 752 or 753 I just hate single isle transatlantic services, its just to clostrifobic.:

first off the GLA transatlantic service will be served by a 767-400 for the summer.
With regards to EDI, continental are expected to start a service next summer, operating a 757 to Newark. This service was in discussion pre- september 11th with the aim of starting service this summer, but due to the events of the day, discussions were abandoned. These discussions are continuing again, and an announcement will hopefully be made soon confirming the route.
BMi have been talking about EDI flights for ages, but so far there doesnt seem to be much hope of seeing thier A330s flying out of here...

Well they get tri stars out, full of army personel, and they have on occasion large cargo a/c, but fully laden with fuel and pax...I don't hav a clue. I just feel that there is enough people over in the East willing to use the service. Even once or twice aweek. Tel u wot though.. Flying a 752 to anywhere longer than a couple of hours is HELL, especially for anyone over six ft,its like flying in a toothpaste tube..

Not an ideal option, but you could come down to Manchester. We have 8 daily scheduled services to the US - all widebody. There are several direct rail services to the airport from Glasgow and Edinburgh - I think they take about 3 hours though. Personally I'd go with the 757, but at least it's another option. The choice of destinations might make it worthwhile though.
Another thought... many brochures, such as the BA one, I think, advertise free connecting flights if you take their transatlantic service, such as the 767 service MAN-JFK - and this flight is one of the earliest arrivals over there, departing at 10:00, arriving 12:40.
I agree with you about travelling down to London - I hate the thought of lining their pockets with extra airport fees, and for that you get to hold for 30 mins before passing through an overcrowded second rate airport! We moan down here about the number of flights we get - it must be so much worse up there. My simpathies are with you...

The Continental link reared its head in the papers up here at the weekend. Doesn't look like it will happen before Summer 2003 though While you are waiting for a direct link, you should fly via Dublin. Do US immigration there and save a bunch of time at JFK (or wherever).

>>Could we get a fully laden A330 out of Edinburgh in the summer???<<
EDI direct transatlantic services have never been trialled.
Indications, ie; comparisions, with routes operated via both
EDI and GLA, show that that ALL EDI rotations outperform their
GLA counterparts.
Would direct EDI transatlantic be any different.? Current form
favours EDI, why the hesitation.?

Joe, I think the question that Callyoushortly was asking, related to whether an A330 was able to physically take-off from EDI; and was not about how many pax were on it.
Anyway, I don't imagine there being a problem since Air Transat operated the same equipment through GLA last summer, and the runway there is only around 300ft longer.
The only problem that may crop up is the fact that there are no parallel taxiways, and this aircraft requires a turning circle of 50m+ (approx).

The A330-200 has managed it at EDI, (A few squashed lights)
but why should it be necessary in this day and age.?
Seems BAA have attracted a lot of unwelcome attention at
EDI, anyone care to participate in a whip-around for the BAA
'Golden Share' ?
