Ok,

seems some people are having brain farts here.

The derogatory comments that some posters have written here - lard ass for example- is not the same as racist words that filth use these days. Anyone that thinks so should go and talk to such a victim.

Being born white/black/green whatever is not a lifestyle choice. Wacko Jacko being the exception.

So yes, you can get away with calling obese people bad names (within reason) because they chose that life. is it right? No. But you can not in any sentence compare it with racism that still plights the 21st century. You can't get away with racism.

P.s Michael point taken

Now this suggests a new way to get revenue. Reduce the size of seats, so that where you have three at the moment, you now have four. Very efw people could fit them, so most people would have to buy two seats. Voila! Extra income.

Sort of lie in them sideways? Like a toast rack?

I'm 6 foot 4. My knees always wedge into the back of the seat in front. Do I demand special seats with extra legroom? No. I'm a lanky git, I deal with it. Simple.

And yes, if people want 2 seats for whatever reason they should pay for 2 seats. Eminently fair and sensible.

Slave ships had them lying down on their sides 'spoon' shaped to get maximum packing density. Then you could could have two or three tiers.

Anything over about three hours and I have to try very hard to fight the temptation to lie down in the aisle to relieve the cramp! Walking around isn't much better as I still can't stand up properly in most airliners. Still, it's only for a short while. I can live with it easily enough.

I once did a 24 hour coach trip because it was £50 cheaper than flying. Never again!

Taken from a independent travel website forum this aft, in response to a suggestion that the whole 'fat tax' thing was just a cheap PR stunt by Ryanair:

"It's exactly that, and I think all of these tedious PR tactics are slowly backfiring on them. They're an airline that's fast running out of ideas as they try to deflect attention from their relentlessly-rising fee structure.

Their communications director couldn't quantify or legitimise any of these 'fat tax' proposals when pressed on the radio today, and ended up just laughing at one point as he got so embarrassingly tongue-tied when trying to waffle about it. It's counter-productive because it offends a section of their audience.

All he kept banging on about was how United Airlines in the States ask overweight people to pay for 2 seats. Strange Ryanair are looking to a major airline for ideas when they spend the rest of the time trying to tell us all how obsolete these major carriers are.

Keeping your fares cheap will always ensure you get *some* custom, but cheap fares aren't the be all and end all, especially when you show such contempt for your passengers.

Ryanair can f*ck off. Easyjet, Jet2 and others are better, just about as cheap and, frankly, a lot nicer."

Ryanair

This is the Topic of the 12.30 debate on Sky News today.

More than 100,000 people took part on Ryanair's website and a third of those voted for the obesity charge.
Ryanair argues that such fees would help them reduce the costs of tickets for other customers who did not exceed the weight limits.
It also said the measure could act as incentive for people to lose weight

Unfortunatly, the bit on Sky News doesnt give a true indication (suprise eh?)...

Below is from an article in one of the travel industry websites...

Over 100,000 passengers voted in an online poll to decide which cost reduction idea should win a €1,000 cash prize.

The final poll results were as follows:

. 29% - Excess fees for very overweight passengers

. 25% - €1 for toilet paper – with O’Leary’s face on it

. 24% - €3 to smoke in a converted toilet cubicle

. 14% - Annual subscription to access Ryanair.com

. 8% - €2 “corkage” fee for passengers who bring their own food onboard.

Ryanair will now consider how to implement such a charge and asked passengers to vote, via Ryanair - Book Cheap Flights to Europe - Cheap Flights from the UK, on which format the charge should take:

. Charge per kg over 130kg/20 stone (male) and 100kg/15 stone (females)

. Charge per inch for every waist inch over 45 inch (male) and 40 inch (female)

. Charge for every point in excess of 40 points on the Body Mass Index (+30 points is obese)

. Charge for a second seat if passengers’ waist touches both armrests simultaneously.

Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said: “Over 100,000 passengers logged on to ryanair.com to take part in our competition and almost one in three (over 30,000)think that very large passengers should be asked to pay a fat tax.

“With passengers voting overwhelmingly for a ‘fat tax’ we are now asking them to suggest which format the charge should take.

“The above four points seem to us to be the simplest, fairest and administratively easiest to apply.

“In all cases we have set limits at very high levels so that a ‘fat tax’ will only apply to those really large passengers who invade’ the space of the passengers sitting beside them.

“These charges, if introduced, might also act as an incentive to some of our very large passengers to lose a little weight and hopefully feel a little lighter and healthier.

“The revenues from any such fat tax will be used to lower the airfares for all Ryanair passengers yet further. Passengers can vote for their preference on Ryanair - Book Cheap Flights to Europe - Cheap Flights from the UK until April 27.”

It is unclear from the 4 options being concidered by FR if 3 of these will give the obese passenger an extra seat, ot just force them to pay more.

Interestingly, the website this came from (for travel industry professionals) was running a poll entitled:
"'Ryanair considers 'fat tax' for large passengers' - Do we like the idea of a 'Fatso' charge ?

The result - 54.82% of those who voted said yes...

Snoop

LoadToad,

How about if the guy sat next you is just BIG? As in broad, wide-shouldered and muscly?

You might be a little thin thing and I can understand you feeling aggrieved that someone might be taking up more space than you - but it's very hard to sit in the next person's seat when you have the armrest dividing you!

If you want to fly in comfort you should do what I do - fly privately. That way you don't have to share your space (although first class on a scheduled airline should offer you that too) and you don't have to contend with severe halitosis either!

Halitosis is a nightmare in cattle class (which you must know about too - thank God I don't have to fly CC now!) - in fact, it's worse than fat rolls. Nothing worse than sitting next to a person with halitosis, gas, or BO! Puke puke!!!

You sound perfect....in every way. I'm surprised airlines don't pay you to fly with them!
