I have, indeed, done enough W&B calcs to have a bit of an idea what it is about. My point was desribing a carrier operating with a single class of service, and with preallocated seating, but who squished everybody together 6-abreast around the CofG in Ryanair style rather than do the calculations (which, come on, are not difficult, every aircraft manufacturer gives you a rapid calculator for the ops team to use) to spread the passengers, and baggage etc, nicely round the aircraft.

I think not doing the calculations saves us time and therefore money.

Not quite, its to save the cost of the computing (either man or machine) required to allocate the seats. Not even MO'L would bank on people running to the a/c to keep turnaround times down...

Come on guys, stop with the paranoia! These things are done for simplicity, not solely to aggrivate you, even if it might seem like it.

I meant not doing the calculations for every flight. We have worked out with boeing which seat rows to block off dependant on the passenger figures, so you know your pax figures, block off relevant rows and save time. A load sheet is still completed, we are in no way doing anything illegal and the aircraft will always be within the W&B limitations. This has been approved by the IAA (and probably also the JAA).

Jet 2's baggage weight

If Jet2 or any other company allow 22kgs I presume their weight and balance system accounts for this.
Yep, we use actual bag weights rather than standard weights for our trim sheets.

Before slagging off Ryanair just bear in mind that it was actually Boeing the designed the loadsheet with Ryanair.

This is to simplify W&B calculations and works very well and checks aircraft is in trim.

The first 160 bags on a Ryanair flight go in Hold 2 which is at the front and blocking row 3&4 is helping the aircraft stay in trim.

Once upon a time, while flying with the late lamented 'Jetmagic' in an Embraer, I was tannoyed to the company desk, shortly after passing through security. Back to the desk, to be asked if I minded a seat change. No problem, so back through security again. got on board and there were only five passengers on the thing. I loved Jetmagic; it was like having a private aircraft.
