David Dimbleby was one of a number of furious Ryanair passengers asking questions after the budget airline failed to check them on to their flights on time.
The Question Time host was left stranded, along with hundreds of other holidaymakers, at Stansted airport yesterday after Ryanair failed to open enough check-in desks.
Police were called in to calm tensions as queues backed up through the terminal, and passengers watched their flights head off into the sunshine without them.

You would think David Dimbleby would have more money and sense than to risk a trip with Ryanair. One piece of publicity that MOL could have done without methinks!

RYR check in at STN is sub-contracted to Swissport .
So is flight dispatch, but as they try and operate with minimum manpower, they're not very good at that either

I don't work for Swissport or any other ground handling agent.
If you miss your flight with Ryanair you lose your money. Ryanair gets to pocket the fare, the airport tax and saves a bit of fuel.
I'm surprised they have any check-in desks open at all.
Anyway, aren't the pax supposed to check in on-line, and travel with only a single, very small carry-on bag, and accept all the rudeness and unpleasantness dished out with a smile?

I have had some close calls with Ryaniar to make a flight when I have been there at check-in with plenty of time. I would suggest that any passenger in the terminal obtains some kind of time and date proof that they were there at the required time. A mobile phone photo of the terminal clock will be ok. If Ryanair cant process the passengers in time then its a simple breach of contract. I wouldnt hesitate to start a small claims if the airline couldnt fulfil thir obligations.

judging by the adverse comments on the Timesonline article on this fiasco there were alot of well-heeled peeps who got left behind at STN who were jetting off to Waitrose by the sea who i guess dont like to admit to friends over the dinner party they fly FR but i suppose they like to fly into all the little cute places which FR do for their little villa hols...

I would be among the last people to have a good word to say about M'O'Ls cowboy outfit but the thread title does beg the question just where these flights going to and over what time period...?
And where did the aircraft originate; according to wikipedia Ryan has a fleet of 190 aircraft...so it might be a bit difficult to check in for flights which hadnt even departed for their first destination never mind their subsequent one...
Looking at Stansteds departure schedule for Monday 3rd August reveals 43 departures in a single two hour period...between 0600 and 0800 so what's the big deal? 11 check in desks should have been quite capable of handling this if passengers were to adhere to the two hour check-in period recommended for European travel. Indeed anyone using Stansted or any London Terminii these days would be well advised to add at least another hour to take account of all the additional security restrictions imposed by you know who...

Just the same as Gatwick & Heathrow, but Ryanair aren't the only operator using STN... and whilst its true they may have about 70% of the departures during the specified 0600-0800 window its a rolling process because in the next two hour period between 0800 and 1000 they have only 13 departures... 56 departures is a long way short of the 255 departures the Mail refers to.
I know it's a cattle-market at any of the London terminii, these days and BAA & HMG couldn't give a hoot.
My initial comment stands I'm afraid, this is just the Daily Mail hyping thing up...
The sad thing is of course that those who impose the O.T.T. regulations are never subject to them, having access to corporate jets and/or the RAF VIP Squadrons...

Yesterday due to staff shortages at our ground handling partner, Swissport, an inadequate number of bag drop desks were operating at Stansted.
Ryanair assures its passengers that it is working with Swissport to ensure this situation does not recur...
