I guess I shoulda said Military towers. (need a checklist)
Nope, you were right, civilian towers do it too(or at least used to), but only for military aircraft.

I'm told it's also done here in the USA, but I haven't personally heard it done.

rmcdonal 21st May 2008 09:21

Can Confirm Civi Towers still call "check gear" to the Military aircraft capable of embarrassing themselves this way (Including choppers). Even heard it called to a BBJ and a "Military Challenger". Makes me laugh each and every time. :ok::}

elche 21st May 2008 13:13

"Check gear"

I've had BK tower tell me to check gear after a gear problem on my first command hr in a twin :}

Put the leaver down expecting 3 green on downwind as per usual but got nothing. There was no one else in the circuit so i stretched the circuit a little for a bit more room and tried the leaver again on base and final, but no luck :ugh:. Just as i was about to call a go-around and tell them what was going on, the twr got back to me with the "check gear" or words to that effect.

Got her down with 3 green in the end though :eek:

Ultralights 24th May 2008 03:46

technam landing.

elche 24th May 2008 07:03

Nice landing.

I didn't know there were more of these Technams around besides the ones from Basair.

Has anybody ever watched the Basair boys and gals do their last 100 feet or so?? They fly up to the threshold nice and slow, then dive :eek: I was told by an ex-basair Instructor they did this for fun...

Jabawocky 24th May 2008 11:35

Also heard of someone down there with undercarriage expenes that others don't have..............maybe you found them!:hmm:

Ask your instructor to tell you about our little friend "Pilot Induced Oscillation", especially before you fly any Cessna
There was no pilot induced oscillation. The guy in the Cherokee just sat there fat, dumb and happy and let it happen. A pretty good effort though! Usually the nose wheel comes off after about the forth or fifth bounce. He (she ?) had seven bounces before the nose wheel departed the airframe. In other words the pilot had six, yep that's right, six oppotunities to get it sorted. It would appear that at no point was any attempt made to rectify the situation. At no point was there any attempt, or even a hint of it ,to hold any sort of attitude. It would've been as simple as that. He/she was evidentally just along for the ride. Unfortunately we see this sort of thing happening far to often. Makes you wonder what they've been taught.

Sunfish 26th May 2008 02:51

Sorry Mr. Budgie, he did try and fix it, that's the problem, he tried to fix it the wrong way by flailing around with the controls instead of holding a constant attitude.

When you get "behind" the aircraft (ie, responding in phase with the aircraft) then each successive bounce is worse than the one before it until either the wheel comes off or you finally run out of energy.

If you watch the video closely, you can see how the pilot was caught by surprise, pushed the column forward and wheel barrow'ed it, then each bounce gets progressively worse until the nose collapsed on his final mighty leap.

I'd be happy to demonstrate if anyone has a free C172 they don't really need to use again.:p

elche 26th May 2008 04:08

Just before the front gave way, it sounds like he adds full throttle and back to idle straight away. Another indication he had no idea how to get out of it... He needed to commit to a decision, but didn't :O

Check Gear

To McDonal. I just wonder if you will laugh if ever you "embarrass" yourself by landing with the gear up and will you still think it is not a worthwhile call to get from the tower, if one is there? It is not only military pilots who are guilty of occasionally making the mistake of forgetting to lower the gear.
