Ah the Cresco over Docklands on climb to FL's to drop meat-bombs over St. Kilda.... Not the best aircraft for taking photos out of with that wing in the way.

Capt Fathom 22nd Aug 2013 22:47

Looks more like a Piper wing to me!

VH-XXX 22nd Aug 2013 23:01

Yeah but my description sounds more exciting.

TOUCH-AND-GO 23rd Aug 2013 23:59

Can't agree with you anymore VH-XXX, but they're a lovely aircraft to fly. :ok:

Here's a shot of the bolty without that wing in the way..

Some slides scanned from my Father-in-law. Probably around 1974, as it also had plenty of slides from the Brisbane flood. He was working central Queensland & PNG at the time.

Great shots volumex. The bottom DC3 picture is at Goroka airport PNG highlands (Kaw Kaw gap in the ranges just above the rear air stair) and the one below that with the two fellas looking over the fence looks to be Mt Hagen airport PNG.

Beautiful (!) SC7 Skyvan there too, the second to last, known often as, "Melody in Metal" or "The Whispering Nissen Hut"!

Looks more like POM to me, looking north toward Mt Lawes from where the APNG terminal is today.

First shot could be Madang.

Well before 1974, has to be prior to the formation of Air Niugini in 1972. My guess the second last photo of the Navajo, Skyvan and Patair DC3 at Port Moresby could be the late 1960s?

The C336 is VH-GKY I suspect. I think that is the aircraft Fris has at the Queensland Air Museum?

My guess: first photo Madang; second photo unknown; third photo Goroka; fourth photo Port Moresby; fifth photo unknown.

The Lear 24D registration VH-SBC has an interesting history and PNG connection. It was originally carried by a TAA DC3 (C47A) in PNG and is now carried by a Kavanagh hot air balloon. The Lear 24D belonged to the Swan Brewery Company up to the early 1970s. I have seen that Lear in Port Moresby in the late 1960s when Swan and San Miguel were in partnership and built the brewery at Boroko or Gordon's.

fl610 28th Aug 2013 00:03

Heh Tailee, better have those glasses upgraded, the Lear registration is SBC not SBD!:E

tail wheel 28th Aug 2013 08:44

Ooops. Finger trouble!

I see VH-SBC is now a Robinson R44.

The C336 at QAM is VH-CMY. Although CMY did carry that colour scheme with Talair I can't be sure which aircraft is in the photo.

The Swan Brewery Lear VH-SBC also participated in the airlift out of Darwin after Cyclone Tracy.

Old Brisbane airport?

BPA 28th Aug 2013 23:03

Agree with Jaba, old Brisbane Airport.

QSK? 28th Aug 2013 23:07

Or is it Darwin Airport after Cyclone Tracy with Qantas ferrying Darwin residents out of the destroyed town?

Flying Binghi 29th Aug 2013 00:34

Bit well dressed fer Darwin..:)

Dora-9 29th Aug 2013 01:06

Hangars in the background are the give-away; Jaba is correct.

Volumex 29th Aug 2013 02:20

I think Brisbane in correct - still going through his slides.
This one was taken in the US, but I have no idea where.
The blimp doesn't excite me too much, but look at the planes in the background.

The old F4. Another great McD machine. Massive amounts of drag countered by prodigious amounts of thrust! :}
