If you think OzRunways is getting too complex I suggest contacting the authors and providing feedback on the software ergonomics.
OzRunways, as well as Easy VFR etc, give you a lot for only about a hundred bucks. |
It's becoming an amateur product again. Does anyone know how to get the area frequency to display on an iphone? I have the box, nothing in it. |
OK developer here to do some fact checking:
Hmmm. I wonder if they sit at home, or lie awake in bed at night thinking "I wonder what feature we can throw at OzRunways"? For example of the features on my list is to make the app scroll seamlessly across the dateline. Most people won't even notice this (except in NZ) but it will take me around a week of solid coding time to do it. There are tons of things like this that go into development that you may not even notice, so when we list 20 things fixed or updated, don't feel overwhelmed if you do not understand them. The existing functionality will not have changed. Or. Does the email inbox go boing...I'd love it more if you added this and that Fuel-Tank timer: This is mean to stop when not moving. For some reason the iPad is sending alerts when stationary too. I have axed this from the next update. In the mean time you can disable by going into iPad Settings -> Notification Center. Area frequencies -- use the HUD boxes at the top. Hold down your finger on the box and set it to FIA freq. There may be a bug with the map popup in v4.0. There are a ton of fixes in v4.0.1 coming soon. Weather radar blank box....Are you on an iPhone? Tap on the picture and it closes. "Downloading db update" -- this is important. Whenever there is a data amendment, AIP SUP update, or any other changes or maps we add, we need to push a new database. This is a small 2mb index of files, maps and waypoints. The app REQUIRES this to run. It is functionally equivalent of downloading the latest GPS Database to a card once a month and inserting it into your GPS box. Except in OzRunways you don't need to do anything except open the app with internet. I'm not sure how this is complicated -- it does not require any user input at all. ADS-B IN with Raspberry Pi. This will not make things more complex. If you don't have the ADS-B box, you are not affected. On the whole, I've got a LOT of positive feedback about this and a lot of people have ordered parts to make their own boxes. The whole point of this is not a $10,000 certified box, but a way for aviation nerds (most pilots), to make something themselves that can value add to their flying or aviation interest in general. In terms of features overwhelming the complexity of the app, I have covered this in a previous post. Every feature is weighed against the added complexity. I'm very much aware of this and I need to cover two types of users: 1) Simple: "I just want to turn the damn thing on and go flying. Let me change maps and make a simple flight plan" 2) Complex: "I want to be able to do a complex IFR plan using air-routes, show me W&B for each sector and circling areas on arrival. #1 can still do this in OzRunways. Turn it on, choose your map and go flying. I'm not sure how adding other features (mostly buried in Settings menu's) affect this. The trick is adding features for #2 people without affecting #1 people. If you're still reading, wow! |
Good reply Shagpile, thanks.

Option = Best chart?
Hi Shagpile
Have been using Ozrunways for a few years now but hung onto AirNav VFR until it crashed and I discovered the moving map part wasn't supported for PC. What I miss, however, is an option on Ozrunways that would automatically open the best chart for the location...WAC, VNC, VTC. If I had that I'd mount a mini up where the TFT screen from the PC has been and only use it as a moving map. Any chance? Soon? Are you still charging a second subscription for the mini if a subscription has already been purchased for the iPad? Regards to the boy Kaz |
How are you expecting the app to know which map suits automatically and select it? I can think of many places where a VTC or VNC suits whereas in others the WAC or VNC may suit ... Be carefully what you wish for!
I'm hanging out for distance measuring functionality as that will float my boat. To measure how close I will be on my route to a passing CTAF would be most handy! |
XXX
It happens on AirNav VFR and the selection is always to the smallest scale (highest resolution and detail). And I asked about an option...turn on or off. Kaz |
Not hard to recognise that if you're 'off chart', automatically load up the WAC, or a IFR Low chart. Being able to set a default preference would be nice and much better than the openstreetmap.

I currently have aerodromes overlaid my maps. How do I turn this off? Spent searching for the option that I'm sure used to be around (used to be able to select aerodromes, IFR or VFR waypoints to be overlaid) but can't find it anymore.
You really need to create a new and professional user manual...not powerpoint slides saved into a pdf... |
Agree with that

Goto:
Maps Map View Options Turn off "Show runways" Keep in mind that the exploded runway details are only displayed for airports you are approaching on the current flight plan. It's a handy feature when you're navigating to an unfamiliar airport. |
Nah mate. The blue circles. Used to be able to control which waypoints (ALA, IFR, VFR) etc were overlaid on the chart.
|
Pull out the tab on the left hand side just below the black info bar. Tap on or off what you want to see on the charts.

With the ADSB Pi reciever you guys have built, any idea if this will work over seas? I'm headed to Canada and, while I'd love to build one, don't want to do it if it isn't going to work.
I assume it's software dependant, eg wouldn't work with another program other than OZRunways? |
I notice the price has quietly gone up ? When did that happen?

AOPA directory
I just purchased the AOPA directory and Touring Guide for Ozrunways but:
Now available in OzRunways 4.1 is the AOPA Australia Airfield Directory. Thousands of new ALAs will be displayed on the maps for better planning and more safety when you need to get down fast. |
I'll have to add the AOPA information to my subscription, seems like a good idea.
Is there an entry for AOPA under Settings | Downloads | Australia ? |

Are you using the current version of OzRunways - 4.1?
