OK

i hate to be the one who closes a thread with ALL the facts, and do not even ask me how I know............. but what i do not say will also reveal the truth.

The Black and red C208....I know it personally so to speak....and yes HARRY COOPER is correct, and Pat the Pilot is not a SAR guy!:ok:

Flipspiceland and is 100% correct:ok:, and FrisBfairing is just playing silly buggers.

Buster Hyman 1st Sep 2009 12:12

Don't believe you Jaba!:=

From this day forward, Mt. Feathertop will be Australias Area 51!!!

:oh: (Doesn't have the same ring does it?) :(

compressor stall 1st Sep 2009 12:28

Above - Mrs Stallie looking at the east face of Fxtop (the other side to where Time slipped). In condition, these gullies (especially the obscured ones) give the best skiing in the state. Bar none. ;)

And a rescue in good conditions...

News.com.au

A TOP-secret, anti-terror spy plane operated by Australian Federal Police was used to find Tim Holding.
The plane, equipped with the latest surveillance gear, was flying high above severe weather on Mt Feathertop when a torch light was seen inside Mr Holding's tent about 10pm on Monday.
When the cloud lifted the next morning a police rescue helicopter took to the air knowing exactly where the MP was.
A Channel 7 news chopper saw him first, but the police cavalry was close behind.
The spy plane revelation - by Victoria Police - was a breach of national security.
The plane is not mentioned by the AFP in its annual reports.
It is believed to have been tested last year and has start-of-the-art surveillance equipment.
Sources said the plane's main purpose was anti-terrorism operations.
AFP chief Mick Keelty, on his second last day in the job, offered the use of the plane to search for Mr Holding.
Victoria Police mentioned the plane on its website when it announced a campsite used by Mr Holding was seen on Monday night by a plane using sophisticated night vision equipment.
"Police located minister Tim Holding just after 10am this morning after an AFP plane located a possible camp site overnight," the statement said.
The statement was later amended to remove all mention of the AFP.
Victoria Police media head Insp Richard Reid contacted media organisations to request that the information be removed.
Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland denied the search for Mr Holding was given the highest priority because he was a minister.
"The resourcing is no different. I mean, a life is a life so we take anyone missing, anyone at risk, as a serious issue and we resource that appropriately," he said.
Premier John Brumby said any search for any missing person was treated with the same care.
He did not request the plane and became aware of its use only after the rescue.
"If anybody is ever lost in the mountains they get the same standard of care and the same standard of search that was applied in this case," he said.
Neither Victoria Police or the AFP would answer questions about the mysterious plane.
But sources said that it could be a Cessna 208 Grand Caravan or a Britten Norman Defender, which had been heavily modified to conduct covert operations at high altitude.
The AFP did not deny it operated the plane, but refused to answer questions about when it had been acquired, what it was used for, or if it had been used in previous rescue operations.
The AFP also refused to comment on speculation that the aircraft was a Cessna 208 Grand Caravan.
"The search-and-rescue mission undertaken to locate Victoria government minister Tim Holding was co-ordinated by Victoria Police. All media inquiries should be directed to that organisation," an AFP statement said

My vote is this guy pre-planned the whole thing, much like the Pommy kid a few months ago. 15min of fame......

VH-XXX 1st Sep 2009 13:46

I wonder if

but sources said it could be a Cessna Grand Caravan
= PPRune !

Personally I'm wondering if it was the Pn68 that was on display at Avalon earlier this year with full surveilance fit-out..

OZBUSDRIVER 1st Sep 2009 13:49

Nuuuhhh, my bet is on this one. P68C out of Canberra.

EDIT--- XXX, this the one? These guys are out of Jandakot.

VH-XXX 1st Sep 2009 13:59

That website accurately describes the scenario for which the equipment was used in this instance. It can't exactly be top secret, someone must have seen it take off from somewhere. Perhaps the equipment lowers down a trap door after takeoff so the atc at Canberra don't take photos of it and put it on YouTube like they have before :-)

Yes that one was at Avalon this year. It's not impossible for it to have been flown over for the job.

Sunfish 1st Sep 2009 20:28

I was going to say something insightful until I realised that it would be better for our troops in Afghanistan to let this topic die...

Flyingblind 1st Sep 2009 21:18

So 'somebody' used a bit of low(ish) tech and common sense to locate a di*%head that couldn't be bothered to carry an EPIRB, mobile phone in the scrub...for Christ's sake!

Get the silly bugger to pay costs for his near Darwin Award.

FLIR/TI etc is not that new or that secret.

Buster Hyman 1st Sep 2009 22:45

:ooh: Ooooh. Putting pics up like that OZBUSDRIVER & you'll likely hear something circling your place tonight....:ooh:

VH-XXX 1st Sep 2009 22:56

EVERY visitor to Avalon saw that aircraft, it ain't no secret :-)

mickjoebill 1st Sep 2009 23:40

I'm curious that Vic Pol heli were not the first to (to be reported) to sight the following morning, assuming they had intel from the night flight and assuming geo pointing kit from that flight was able to give an accurate fix on the 'target' and assuming police wanted to be seen to find him ahead of anyone else.

Put another way, when the Channel Nine made the radio call was Vic Pol helicopter in the near vicinity or were they miles away with no more accurate idea of where the man was than the day before?

No big deal to see the subject at night especially if he has a torch lighting the interior of a tent if the weather was clear.
If weather was overcast then it becomes more interesting.....

Wallsofchina 1st Sep 2009 23:46

Do we really need to broadcast our security equipment to everyone?

OZBUSDRIVER 2nd Sep 2009 00:07

Wallsofchina.....if this stuff was black ops then you wouldn't see it on the viewing line at AV...The guys would not have been so candid with Phil Phelan...It is only a secret who these guys may work for...the gear? you can buy off the shelf and mount it in your Jabiru if that is your fancy:ok:

Checklist Charlie 2nd Sep 2009 00:08

Wallsofchina you perhaps fail to credit those on the other side with having the knowledge already. Those lower skilled dummies that don't are the ones that get caught and publicly finish up in court. That is unless you are an Indian Doctor.

Wally Mk2 2nd Sep 2009 00:51

'Griffo' I'm with you, this 'experienced' guy had no personal EPIRB/ELB.
Some of the cost should be looked at associated with this task ought to be bared by the guy himself due possible negligence on his behalf.

Anyway who cares how why when & where they found this guy, he's alive & that's all that counts as in a few weeks months it will mostly be all forgotten anyway. It's only his position that has got everyone all worked up. You & I would hardly rate a mention if lost in sim circumstances.

MickJoeBill, I recall the article said that PolAir was close behind the news chopper that spotted him first, but PolAir was carrying the coordinates and Channel X wasn't - they were just in the right place at the right time and happened to see him.

If one of us low-lifes went missing without a PLB, expect an SES group from the local Bright SES of 10 people looking over 2 days then giving us up as lost. If they did happen to find you and you had a broken leg on the side of a cliff you MIGHT get a ride out in PolAir or HEMS if you are lucky.

Buster Hyman 2nd Sep 2009 02:11

We're getting into the realm of "subsidising stupidity" by rescuing these people...Tony Bullymore springs to mind...and that probably deserves its own thread really.

It's interesting to see that this "supposed" secret aircraft has now been inadvertantly exposed. What transpires next will be of interest, least of all how the phone call between Mick & Simon goes....:E
