Tim Holding Mountain Rescue

Herald Sun quote -

A private aircraft, not related to the search, spotted Mr Holding last night while he was wearing a headlamp given to him by his partner for his birthday last month.

Deputy Comissioner Kieran Walshe said he could not discuss the use of the aircraft because of security reasons.

The plane had spied a possible camp site overnight, narrowing the search area this morning.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the plane used was not a police plane but she could not comment further on the aircraft.

A police chopper winched the 37-year-old to safety from Mount Feathertop about 10am.

Any clues on the 'secret security sensitive' aircraft???

DH 200' 1st Sep 2009 03:31

Heard the super secret security sensitive aircraft was a news helicopter!:ugh:

tmpffisch 1st Sep 2009 03:34

Yeah, I read it was the Ch7 chopper.

C180FOXTROT 1st Sep 2009 03:53

The helicopters were flying this morning, not last night.

Could it have been the AMSA Dornier? Whatever it was it worked.:D

flipspiceland 1st Sep 2009 04:21

some reports said it was an AFP plane. do the AFP even operate aircraft?

zube 1st Sep 2009 04:34

There were reports it was Channel 7 chopper. Can't verify it.

That might explain the reluctance of the walloper to talk if his blokes didn't find the lost pollie.

P3. $40K an hour...Not to be used for every Tom, Dick or Harry.

The Green Goblin 1st Sep 2009 04:39

So is he going to make a donation for his rescue?

Usually the pollies are the first to call for such a thing when someone is in the same position. Will be interesting to see what happens

The link quoted in post #1 now says:

The Channel Seven news crew, flying overhead in a chopper, was the first to spot Mr Holding.

Story around the traps last year was that the AFP was heavily modifying an aircraft for surveillance roles - rumour was it is a Grand Caravan and was decked out with some pretty high end FLIR and so on. I do know that the AFP were flight testing an aircraft as of mid-last year. Not out of the question to bring it down from Canberra (or wherever) for a bit of operational testing under the cover of darkness!

john_tullamarine 1st Sep 2009 05:52

Why do that when the PAW has FLIR on the Dauphin ? .. or, at least, they used to have the installation ?

KTM525 1st Sep 2009 05:53

Wasn't that black and red Caravan that landed at YSSY yesterday was it? (probably wasn't but it had a great looking paint scheme)

Cargo744 1st Sep 2009 06:35

Channel 9 News just stated that it was their chopper that spotted him!

Buster Hyman 1st Sep 2009 06:49

It's the Harold Holt retrieval squadron running a little over budget, and a tad late:E
