Sarcs, that 400ft fluctuation at Madura Pass wouldn't have been on approach to RWY 01 by any chance? That's a fairly impressive escarpment to run into on the undershoot.:eek:
The other strips at Eucla are really only 172 material, including the 'taxiway' to the 'terminal building', but I gather being a night visit you didn't venture down there.
I did get a 402 onto the south facing strip once during a howling southerly but it was a bone shaker with plenty of green prop tips.

Towering Q, must have been RW 01, had a fair bit on my mind at the time as only one side of the runway lights were working at the time so had a major issue with blackhole itis....then suddenly the high to low....what can I say!!!! 'Life of a RUFDUS pilot'.

In terms of Eucla, as stallie said, you spend so much time peddling around at night with RUFDUS that Eucla is only one of probaly hundreds of strips that you only ever see at night so it is interesting to see what they look like during daylight hours!

And you still landed with only one side lit up?

maxgrad, if I remember rightly runway end lights were working and the flight was a P1 which ultimately became a Mercy Flight (due the lighting).

The biggest worry was (a) lack of peripheral lighting and (b) the escarpment which has been known to create quite severe mech turb on final.

Anyway maxgrad enough of my particular experiences this is supposed to be about the photos......I thought!!!???

The 'lighting' there is very interesting. A series of household globes connected to a truck battery. Always wondered how effective they would be when you night-owls visited.

Im surprised you haven't been there in the dark Q, it used to be quite a regular thing, most of the managers needed to be shown the lights....one or two that their was in fact an airstrip...

Too true, bit like a lawnmower in the long grass there at times isn't it? Touch wood noone ever picks up any "dog bones"

It's a Hornet STOL Aussie made kit, generally for the UL market however this one is GA registered. The first one was getting around with a Rotec radial. This one is powered by a 4 Cylinder Rotax 914 which is 115 horsepower at takeoff and 105 continuous. Should do a pretty short take-off which that much power under the hood. MTOW is 600 kilo's so may be registered under LSA category unless the 600kg's is a coincidence and it's home-built experimental. Home base is Mount Isa QLD.

Nice airstrip, but the Tecnam RG got off the deck in a fraction of the time the Hornet STOL did, which was interesting......

I don't recall ever seeing that at Mt Isa Airport, but according to the civil aircraft register it's registered to Kallala Station, which is halfway between Dajarra & Urandangi. Close enough to Mt Isa for the post office anyway! :}

Hi guys sorry to hijack the discussion... I am intending to get my PPL in Australia in the near future and I intend to be there for an extended holiday within that period of time. Is it possible to for me to rent an aircraft after I get my PPL to visit such places? How much does such trips actually cost? Cheers.

i also noted the Foxbat took off in half the distance the Hornet did! :confused:
it is a beautiful strip and property there at *******(any guesses to the location?), like landing on a bowling green with a 10 inch foam underlay! great to land on, but felt like long wet grass when taking off! made for a good 50% longer take off roll in the vampire. :{

and to answer Dream747's question, it is most defiantly possible to hire an aircraft and fly to such places! as a few did for the flyin pictured above. as for costs, that depends on what aircraft type you hire, Jabiru or similar will cost approx $95 to $150 an hr wet to hire, the GA stuff will cost from $120 for a C172 up to well over $200 an hr for a Piper archer or Arrow.
the strip shown above is always welcoming of visitors, and not only provides a great airstrip but great camping facilities as well also self contained cabins for very cheap rates!

You are quite right about the soft surface. Nice thick mat of grass but soft underneath, however they did have an inch or two of rain in the days before. So its not surprising.

Apart from the vampire......you did not take a pic of the nicest plane there :{:E. And I can assure you it was the cleanest plane there anyway! Freshly washed and blow dried enroute!
