Wasn't there one taken from your aircraft with the bridge beneath and your name "Bloggs" placarded nicely on the helmet?

Trojan1981 3rd Oct 2012 00:31

I seem to remember that photo!

Nice shots Bloggs :ok:

Reminds me of a similar piccie of a Hornet (I think) but somehow in the production it had been 'mirrored' and was backward. Have I remembered that correctly? I was probably in high school when that piccie appeared so may have remembered it incorrectly.

RENURPP 3rd Oct 2012 05:49

That's he one, with Bloggs at the controls
:ok: nice shot.

The mag was only $2 a copy in 1984, what does. Copy cost now?

I think this is V-BZF once again.

The poor photo 'quality' suggests that I shouldn't even post this one, but the uniqueness of the subject has prevailed ......

poor photo 'quality'
If you have the time and inclination, it's quite a simple procedure to correct those older prints for colour fade. Using photoshop you could also reign in the highlights which appear to be slightly blown.

I'd be interested to know what film these old photos were taken on, looks like a fair bit of slide but perhaps not all of them are?

Is that last photo in Adelaide, I am from there and have worked at ADL and dont recognize the background, is that looking toward Tapleys Hill Road, if it is ADL.??

Yes, it is indeed ADL, and hard to recognise today in light of the enormous development in the past 45+ years. All of these were taken from the original terminal building before it was ever extended outwards towards what is now the A2. Tapleys Hill Road is the in background :ok:

My estimate is that the area behind the aircraft would now be the location of the RFDS complex - and other buildings in that area. These days I'm usually far too busy negotiating the new traffic arrangements to adequately take in the more interesting parts of the ADL experience.

All of these have been "worked on" on the way you describe. The slides have taken on a slant towards the red / brown end of the spectrum, and I've used various options available in my program (Arcsoft Photo Studio) to lift them as best I can. One other aspect of this is that there are quite a few variables in the perception of correct colours as finally viewed in any given situation, not the least of which will be either the settings or the natural rendering of the end user's monitor or screen. What I see on my screen is probably quite different to how it might be viewed on another. The colour perception of our eyes can also adapt to changes in the overall hue of a given subject, and can give variable or sometimes confusing results.

These were all taken with a Pentina SLR camera and Perutz C-18 slide film. Perutz - a German product if I remember correctly - distributed and processed by Hanimex in Australia, was highly regarded in it's day for colour accuracy and it's 50 ASA speed. However in nearly all instances the original dyes did not stand the test of time and despite careful storage, they have nearly all suffered in this way. There may have been variables in the processing also.

Thank you for your suggestion - it's well received. I've tried, there may indeed be better ways of doing it. :ok: In any event there are only one or two more remaining shots in my collection from this location and era.

Perutz was a great film - my favourite was Kodachrome 25, I've restored a heap of slides back to near original condition, despite having been stored in a damp shed for forty years. Some of them had turned magenta, amazing what you can recover though.

FOR - apologies, haven't had a play with Elements yet, but looks like ArcSoft is doing a good job!

Good grief - I used the one step photo fix on the Piaggio in PaintShopPro 10 & got it to look way better than the original!

Clinton, Grumpy Monkey Mirage A3-78 looks to have a 286 gallon centre line tank. Well spotted, the deployed speedbrakes. I think that the "panniers" with the Dzus fasteners were mainly used to do a bit of smuggling from Tengah to Butterworth by 75 and 3 Sqns. And that they were "Big Jugs" ie 386 gallon? Ours at 3 Sqn sure was. ( Almost everyone in 1981 wanted a then brand new Sony or National VCR and blank tapes . The baggers' wives wanted to copy "Debbie does Dallas" and other similar quality movies...) So that aircraft had 600 gallons along with 55 in the leading edges plus 220g in the supersonics. Along with 286g in the centreline. A fair bit or range with the afterburner off. Goodness, the Skull may have even been the pilot in this photo.... Cheers, Despot 20.

Bloody hell, Cpt Bloggs! That looks like A3-116 in which I spent the most exciting hour of my life on 24th Jan 1980. (Just checking the date on my office wall "MachBuster certificate". An engine air test in the then 77Sqn dual Mirage. Flying through the speed of sound. Then later, hooning low level around Myall lakes. Sadly, A3-116 was broken up but the fin is preserved outside the Australian Air League HQ at Coffs Harbour Airport. On my infrequent visits there, I give it a slap and kiss. Thanks, so much to my pilot Brian Johnson. I wonder what you are doing these days? Cheers, Despot 20.

Keg 8th Oct 2012 21:50

Last I knew Brian was a Qantas 767 Captain. I vaguely recall that he may have moved on from the 767. Perth based 737 Captain now perhaps?

HaHa. Right Body Gear on the runway and Right Wing Gear still on approach. (YSSY RWY 34L @ 2000 ft. in)
SMACKDOWN!
The windsock (visible under #4 engine) looks quite benign too.

Interesting use of landing lights -at that height and daylight!
