I thought KRD (and KRO) were C206 and KRD came to a sticky end somewhere else and the Nipa prang was one of the SE_ series? KRO ended up near the Daula Pass around 1975.

KRD was definitely a 185 many hours in my log based Mendi.
I think it was ex King Ranch Developments?
Just going thru log there is.... GKE GKF GKI CMW CMS KRD EIE . a total of 7 185's. of TAL.

Ah yes Chimbu Warrior KRD under the command of Capt "Gumis" Morris crashed after T/O at Mendi in 1972 on rising terrain towards Clancys Knob. (Balus III p.200.)

I don't remember a C185 prang at Mendi but do remember Warwick breaking one at Nipa. And I would have thought that prang was during the time Chimbu was in PNG?

Chimbu, bet ya a Brownie - bet to be paid at the Reunion next weekend - that KRD was not the C185 pranged at Nipa.

Also, what happened to the TAL Cessna 185 that Junior restored in Australia and you used to fly? Was it eventually sold?

25th March 1972 "Gumis" attempted to take off "uphill" at Mendi.
i.e. towards Clancys knob and rising terrain.

The folks in the Mendi Valley club came out to watch:p
Poor old KRD smote the ground not far from the end of the strip.
"Gumis" went on to an illustrious career in ATC.

Old C185 Regos

Looked up my logs to check where I'd flown KRD. It was originally imported into Australia by King Ranch Development, a Yank cattle company credited with the introduction of the Santa Gertudis into tropical Aust. It then went to PNG under the Ron Firns' STOL logo.

Although I had checked out on a c185 back in November 1965 with STOL, (VH-STP), it wasn't until Feb 1967 that I became a part-timer with them again. On 13 Feb '67, I checked out with Phil Chittock in VH-KRD at Daugo Is, and flew my 1st ICUS to Naoro on 19 Feb '67, and to Cloudy Bay next day. My very 1st PIC in a c185 was in KRD 'all stops' to the SE and back on 7th March '67.

There were some interesting strips down there - Biabara was right on the beach - and very rough. Cloudy Bay was ,as usual, very wet and slippery, and not the nicest place.

After that, I got to fly KRD quite often, between stints in SBU, CMO, DJU, and STP over the period 1967 thru to 1970.

There is already a Nostalgia forum in PPRuNe - but I don't think the ex PNG mob would be very welcome there! :E

And there is already too many forums so we won't get a dedicated Nostalgia forum in Dunnunda. So just have to be satisfied with a "stickied" thread here. Threads should be closed around 100 posts and a new thread commenced, but I'll let this thread run until the Boss complains or it dies a natural death.

On past performance, PNG threads have all died a natural death and that's probably as it should be. However, I reckon that there'd be more and different types of threads if we had our own forum. I think that we all feel a bit constrained by having to post our threads in forums that are shared with other folks who have no interest in PNG.

It's a real pity that there's no way to get our own forum, but thanks for keeping this thread going so long for us W. At least the thread subject allows full latitude in topics. I guess that the problem might end up being that several different topics might run on here at the same time coz we can only concentrate on a dozen things at a time - usually all inside a cardboard carton... :D

Oz. This thread has been very successful - and the users have been far better behaved in their mature years, than in their PNG years. :}

This thread is winding down. Will wait for the Talair reunion threads to also die down, unstickie both, then if demand warrants, perhaps open a "PNG & Australia Nostalgia Thread", stickied in one of the forums.

A separate forum is out of the question as we probably have far too many forums now - what is often not realised is the hundreds of man hours needed every day by all the Mods around the world, moderating PPRuNe forums. Also, in reality, the number of users with PNG interests and the number of available topics would be insufficient to sustain a Forum in it's own right.

I can just see an Ex PNG Forum topics: Getting sloshed at the Temple of Aeros; Silver bellies - good or bad; Will VD invalidate my Medical?; How much did you make out of Talair cash fares; et al. :E

To my way of thinking, 20,500 "views" of this thread indicates it was of interest to far more lurkers than actually posted - that is exactly what PPRuNe is all about. I'll chat with my fellow Woomeri and see what ideas we can come up with. However, whilst there is an interest from users and the posts are of general interest, amusing and topical, we will find a way to keep a nostalgia thread alive.

And lets not forget there are many PPRuNe users I'm sure who would have amusing stories to tell from the real days of Australian aviation.

PPRuNe is it's users! If there is a need, we will meet it.

I'll have you know that there were some fine gentlemen members of the Animal Club... formed in the TAA mess (aka Transair Lodge) in the very early sixties. We were most reluctant to go to bed early - on our own that was - sober!

Some of the members went to TAA CBR, MEL and BA PER... a couple went back to NZ. I'd love to find these guys again.
