Tinny

Would this be the same person- whom (ex CASA- as, I was given/or led to understand???), was toward the end of 'one's' career the 'Aviation' consultant to the STARS in the only 'free' settled State of AUS, to one Santos..........

And after having delivered the Coup de grāce to the filthy interlopers- then, Kev (busy in Europe) & Burkesey (or names that may, or may-not bare any resemblance...??) - bloody near burnt the wing off a Bombarder inbound ex The Cooper and subsequently 'parked' it at RMA pending the manufacturer sorting that dross out.............?????- is all good- apparently......

Nice/Sweet Bongo- Chimbu..........

Apologies, nil pidgin compliant............

Many thnx

yeah...wonder if they are still 'valid'...:)

Nice pic of Y in the clear chimbu.

I had just watched a mate in an Aztec do what today would be described as a 'missed approach' ...

tinpis 13th Dec 2010 18:43

Seem to recall in the 70's the A.N.O. 28 allowance was worth about an extra $400 a year.:hmm:
1000 hours in PNG and operate in at least 3 or 4 areas including highlands to qualify?
Section-28 as mentioned earlier in here, Ray Mac was waiting with Jasper M on an airstrip for the WX to clear (rather similar to the Yalumet picture) when yours truly arrived dumped off pax and buggered off again. I never even noticed two white guys sheltering on the strip
Very impressed he was :(

skywagondriver 14th Dec 2010 03:49

It was a pay increase and you got to see all of PNG as Crowley's main business was helicopters so there was a lot of 'crew' changes...GPS would have been great :)

Somewhere have another letter allowing me to fly with a pistol...

troppo 14th Dec 2010 05:20

Yeah what chuck said (I think). Slept at aseki early on and being offered the grass hut and unidentifiable char cooked dead animal for dinner (like a buka meri, still pink on the inside) was gratiously declined. If I had a bottle of gold cup there would probably be lil troppos running around now.

Have you ever wondered what might be down in them thar holes? (Near Ok Tedi)

Drinking and washing in the water from the 0k Manga and Fly rivers makes them turn out like that.

At 157 pages, I'll 'assume' the answer to be yes, bloody well done you.

Well bloody done.........., against what is promulgated as............, would have paid to be there....

Cheers

P.S.: Was always alert being there (staff & equipment)- but, as I was once told by- 'An Old Hand' of repute.........

Its the same Munda. The old up-lifted Nissan hut on stilts was taken down some time ago. It was down closer to the lagoon, just across the road from 'Agnes Rest House', and near where the Police Station is now. There was another 'International Terminal' for a while ( about where the QueenAir and Aztec were parked in their respective photos). The apron was all compacted coral from the War - just like concrete. The old tarmac area is a street now with a row of Chinese and local shops, and your terminal is set closer to the windsock area and runway. Still plenty of tarmac space for the Aussie big Hercs to back in and unload disaster relief supplies for a dump, in the big shake in the West a few years ago though. That was when the runway got a fault line and dip across it about halfway along. The Solomon carpenters have used a wider spacing between the steps, on the streetside steps, as well as on the airside steps, than you may be used to, so be careful you don't stumble going up and down if you are not used to little differences like that..

Somewhere have another letter allowing me to fly with a pistol...
Never knew you could get one of those letters, or needed one for that matter. I carried mine whenever I thought it might be a good idea.:uhoh:

Mainly when headed to a certain Goilala strip which had an 'ILS'.:hmm:

Chimbu chuckles 16th Dec 2010 04:50

They stopped handing out those letters in 1986. I heard about the deal and rang Craigie, then boss of DCA, to get said letter - I hasten to add I had no desire to carry while flying as part of some BS jungle survival kit but wanted one for general self defence against rascals.

Al informed me that the practice had recently been stopped.

"What dumb c*&t did that?":ugh:

"Me actually"

:}

I joined the pistol club instead - bought a really nice FAS .22 target pistol for comps and owned a selection of higher calibre handguns over the years for self protection.

From memory, at the time it was the only way to get a licence to possess one...'survival equipment'...

Never flew with it - it was considered 'home defence' when you were away for the night. Things were getting 'restless' long before independence, especially in places like Rabaul and Lae with some nasty incidents involving 'European' women,so it made some of us happier to know that the wife/girlfriend had some firepower and practice at the pistol club...

swaziboy 16th Dec 2010 07:15

Munda

Thanks Frigatebird...

Was there in September and couldn't recognise a thing from your pics... they must have needed the space for their new "main drag" with its 4 shops!! Was a nice change from PNG though so will be headed back in March!

I joined the pistol club instead
So did I Chuckles which is how I obtained mine. Used to shoot every Saturday when I could. Felt it was a handy thing to have available just in case some raskol decided that I may have had something that he would like to have for himself.

Thankfully that possibility never eventuated, at least whilst I was there anyway.

I do remember though that when I enquired about having a pistol for my 'survival kit' I was told that you could no longer do that. When I asked why I was told that some 'very silly Talair pilots' (The actual words used!) had been shooting their pistols off the balcony of their residence at various things and the Firearms branch of the PNG Constabulary viewed these actions as 'a bit naughty.' (Also the actual words used):E
